Tyre sizes / Brands for Minilites

#1 Post by Forkie » Wed Jan 11, 2023 6:02 pm

So i have had a new set of 5.5 X 15 Minilites for sometime now, and am in the process of getting them onto the car. It was suggested at the time ( I believe from the company I purchased the wheels from) the suitable tyre size to be 185 / 65/ 15. Would any other 'Minilite' owner agree with that?
And regarding brands - as i am trying to keep it as period as possible, and not wishing to sound snobby, im not over keen on fitting shall we say ' never heard of that brand before'. I was going to have Michelin fitted, but my guy has put me off, saying they are not what they were ( heard THAT before !). So my question is, what other 'home grown ' tyres do you have on your Minilites?

Dave B on here has Minilites on his Mk2 2500 - maybe he can give you the tyre size he uses?

I have Uniroyal RainExpert tyres on the Minilites on my TR6, they are 15x7 so the size wouldn't help you, they are great tyres though. I have Rainexperts on the Stag steel rims on my Mk2 PI and will be fitting a set to the TR6 rims going onto my Mk1 Estate, I guess you could say I'm a fan!

Would be interesting, it would seem several people do have them, and although this size was given to me ,that was like 7 years ago, things change /become obsolete so fast in the auto industry i was just curious. More so with the brand though, really would like to 'keep it British',rather than something like ' *andsai* '

Lots of cars doing runs like the Round Britain use the RainExperts, they’re very popular and a good price

Check one of the online tyre size calculators to see what profile you'll need to keep near to the original rolling radius, bearing in mind that the original tyre size was 175/14 and 80/82% profile. I know that 185/14 70% is much the same radius as the original on a Stag and that is what I have on mine. I also have them on the PI saloon, well had them - the Pi is currently on a spit in the garage undergoing serious body surgery!

Glad to see you back on here Forkie! It's been a while!

Thanks for the tip Mike, yes i've had too little time for too long for the car but things have changed somewhat recently so i'm attacking it with vigour now ,and spending a fortune to boot !!! So with much renewed interest as it is finally back on the road, albeit with some teething issues, the questions are back

I did see something about your P.I. - i have a lot of catching up to do !!

So ordered up a set of Uniroyal RainExpert 185/65/15 88T at a really good price - cant wait to see them wrapped around the new wheels, should set the car off nicely. Hoping at the week end to post up it's removal from the garage - under it's own power, not a tow rope I must add, after 14 years, along with a few pics of the underside whilst it was up on the hoist over Xmas. And , if it ever stops raining down here, it is well over due a proper washdown and polish,
I will change the wheels over and post that up as well.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, , I've got 195/60 15 Firestone on mine, a bit 'snug' inside the rear arches but they don't touch.
I use a TR5/6 steel with the same size tyre as a spare wheel.
