Having recently had my car re-sprayed I'm dismantling and painting everything underneath...
Took the rear road springs out today and removed the upper spring insulator which seats on a large circular pressing on the body.
Is it correct for there to be a large open hole there allowing water etc to get into the box section or should there be some sort of large grommet?

Re: Rear Road Spring
Hi David,
It is open to the elements.
I usually spray some corrosion preventative wax in the space, such as Bilt Hamber Dynax 50, whenever I have the springs off (easier access).

Yes, mine has been waxoyled 15 odd years ago by the previous owner and there's no harm in me spraying some more in...
... But especially as I regularly hose out my wheel arches I'm thinking of covering the hole with a large grommet.

Re: Rear Road Spring
That hole doesn't (or shouldn't!) go right into the box section, just into the spring mount. As the hole is facing down, any water getting in there should drain out anyway. Spraying some anti-rust treatment and/or protection in there is certainly a good idea.
Some years ago there was a suggestion of fitting a tube in there to help spread the spring load onto the box section above. That would create a void space so rust prevention could then become more important!
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Rear Road Spring
Well I stuck my fingers up inside... It is indeed a closed space - thankfully!
A secret hiding space!
There was a bit of dust to clean out...
...so I won't be sealing the hole, it needs to breathe!
