As Llesseur has suggested, PAS models had this rubber coupling, whereas manual steering models had solid upper and lower UJ couplings with a longer solid shaft between them.

You have anovel way of wire locking, why not drill the head?
Haha, that's how they are from factory as far as I know 🙂
As an example, the similar joints on a Volvo 240 have the holes in the end of the bolts, secured with spring clips.

John,
Hope you are well. You stated in this thread..whereas manual steering models had solid upper and lower UJ couplings with a longer solid shaft between them.
Looking forward, would this 2 U/J system fit my car, as I'm sure that my last one of the same year had the "solid" shaft fitted.I'm sure at the time I was able to replace the U/J as we used the same joints on our fork lifts..
Thanks,
Bill.

No, no PAS

Is that the reason why?

I believe all PAS Mk2's had the rubber flexible coupling on the uppermost joint of the steering shaft. Manual steering cars had a solid shaft with uj's at either end, which is actually longer than the PAS shaft due to the rack body being thinner and therefore the splined pinion off the rack sitting in a lower position than a PAS rack.
Interestingly, very late Mk1's (from around 114,000 chassis no) and Mk1 PI's were fitted with the upper flexible rubber coupling as standard, despite being manual steering.

My 1967 Mk1 had the rubber coupling. I always thought they were standard on the Mk1.

It is quite while since I had a Mk1 though..

Cheers
Mike.

John/Mike,
Thanks for your reply on the steering shafts. I know theses couplings are getting harder to get in a reliable form and I am just trying to see what would fit as an optional alternative. Before I went down that route,I think I would be looking to other sources ,possibly in polybushing.
Thanks again lads, keep safe.
Bill.
