Mk2 front hubs?

#1 Post by Sal » Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:25 pm

Hello there,

I’m told that the mk2 front hubs are about quarter of an inch wider than the mk1’s - can any of you knowledgeable lot confirm this please?

The reason for asking is I’d like to widen the stance of my Mk1 so if anyone has a set for sale I’d be interested.

Thanks
Sal

Hi Sal,
The early Mk1's hub assembly was part no 133536, which was fitted upto chass no. MB 104995. After that the hub assembly was part no 151081. This coincides with the change of disc thickness from .350" to .500", which then continued into the Mk2 production.
The stub axle length didn't change, so therefore, whether the later hubs were actually wider or narrower to accommodate the, in effect, .500" Mk2 brake discs, I'm not sure, but hopefully someone else may be able to confirm either way?
The calipers also changed at this point on the late Mk1's to accommodate the bigger pads and discs.
I may also be able to dig out a set to confirm either way?

Hello Sal,

it would seem your thought is correct.

From the workshop manual,

MK1 front track is 52.00" and the MK 2 is 52.50", with ther rear at 50.37 for the Mk 1 and 52.875" for the MK 2.

Possibly an easier way would to be fitting 1/4" thick spacers, with the rider that this may need longer wheel studs to ensure that a full nut and a little bit is maintained?

Thanks John, thanks Alex

So if I obtained a set of complete mk2 front hubs I’d gain an extra quarter of an inch plus bigger discs and callipers.

John you mentioning digging out a set, will these be for sale by any chance?

Cheers
Sal
