Exactly Mike.

Hold that thought! If CW doesn’t come through then I’ll come back to you if that’s OK?

Sure, no problem. I'll try and get down to the shed and have a look in the next couple of days.

Cheers,
Mike.

I think that would be ideal as it will sense the temperature on the radiator side of the thermostat. Until the thermostat opens you're not really bothered as the engine isn't up to temperature. Once the thermostat has opened, then the temperature either side of the thermostat should be the same. Assuming the thermostat is working OK that is!

When you say 'thermostat housing' I assume you mean the top bit as in your picture? I should have some around too if Chris can't find you one.

Cheers,
Mike.
Hi Mike, it seems that CW couldn’t put his hands on one, so if you can find one then PM me with details and price. I shall be going to Stoneleigh next month, I don’t know whether you are?

Early 2000 Mk1 had the temp sender in the thermostat housing, Later mk1 it was blanked off and the sender in the water pump housing. Mk2 had the different thermo casting with no place to drill and tap.

No idea when they stopped the earliest type

Pinched off another forum.

I've just been out to look at my spare engine - off a 1964 2000 - and it does have the sensor in the cover, exactly as in this picture. There's a very clear exploded view confirming this in Haynes p 53.
Perhaps it was only on early 2000 engines, but the sensor is definitely after the thermostat.
Perhaps there was an intermediate period when they retained the blank casting but moved the sensor to the block?

Sorry Andy - crossed with your post. :)

OK, I'll have a look. However, after Andy's post, it may be that what I may have will not be suitable as most of the bits I have are Mk2!

Cheers,
Mike.

OK, I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

I'm afraid I've not got down to the shed yet. It's at the bottom of the garden and it is a bit of a trek, especially in this weather.

I haven't forgotten. Honest!

Cheers,
Mike.

Is it not better to measure the temperature on the engine side?

Say the thermostat fails closed, measuring on the water side would not give any indication of overheating until steam appears, whereas on the engine side the temperature would be monitored throughout.

Hi Phil,

I’m not looking to measure the engine temperature, the existing temperature sensor does that and is on the engine side of the thermostat. I am after this particular thermostat housing so that I can fit a temperature-switch into it to trigger my electric fan, rather than insert temperature a sensor into the top hose or cut the hose to insert another housing to take a temperature switch.

I did explain in my original post.
