Well mine is as pretty much as stock as they come, and when he spent his time tuning and fettling it was just an open engine so to speak - nothing coming off the carbs at all, and no breather pipes to carbs. Running lovely, revving freely. After 20 mins or so I decided to pop the 3 way breather piece back and the engine decided it wasnt keen!!!! He had to alter the idle speed again but with that on it now has it's uneven idle back , thats when he decided it doesn't seem happy with that back on.
That is how it is currently set up temporarly - breather pipes fitted, but nothing to the carbs. Whether the slight wear in the dashpot assemblies are the cause i am not sure. I will report back if i sneak a short drive later.

I ought to explain when i mentioned the breather set up upsets the idle, as i have always said it idled fine - so by me saying ' it idles fine' , the normal tickover was always as it should be tacho wise, not eratic other than it always had this ' miss a beat ' kind of thing, so like ' buh buh buh buh buh .... buh buh buh buh .....' and so on. Probably more 'buhs' in between but i hope you understand what i am trying to say  . Well ever since i have had the car, it has always done that, it seems like a cycle, as in it seems to always 'miss' at regular intervals. Well when he had all that off ( and all filters) and got everything evened out, that was gone !!!!!! No more miss !! Until i put that 3 branch breather back on - that brought the miss back ? Thats when he said its not happy with the breathers fitted ......

Well you couldn't make it up - this is Soap Opera quality !!!! So got home, sun is still out, no rain, roads are dry. Ideal. Right - its going out. Let the lad know- he up for it. Already said lets wait until 5.45 at least, let all the 5pm leaving work idiots tearing up the tarmac get gone, i want a stress free drive . Went out at just after 5.30, fired it up - good as gold. Adjusting the choke inwards, whilst backing out the garage and up the drive -BINK - N/S dipped beam headlight went into darkness.... failed. Tried a short journey - not confortable - couldn't see or gauge any distance from the left side. at all. .... back to the garage.....good job i have to order a C.W. package, will have to add a headlight. No chance - n/a on his site. So i am already considering my next forum topic - which headlight conversion? Oh the joys of a near 50 year old car....

Hi Mike,
I' m not sure if that is a good thing or bad  It has certainly been interesting. I am looking forward to getting it all hopefully cleared up with the new breathing system that is planned. We were hoping for this weekend but as seems par for the course these days there have been a few errors with some of the parts we are waiting for so i would now think it will be another week. I will obviously post up when we reach that point.

It has been a bit of a long slog, i will admit, but for some it tends to inadvertently go that way!!! How is your own getting on? And as a p.s., having spoke to C.W. earlier i had mis-read his info on headlights, assuming each SIDE was handed, which they are not ( i have no idea why i thought that  ) , of course they are only handed by which side the driver sits!! So at least i now have another headlight ' heading ' my way. Another issue solved :)

Ok so this question will only be applicable to ' a few'. What top speed, normal driving conditions, not hammering it etc, good condition engine with the usual consumables as new , is expected from a 2500 S Auto?
Answers on a postcard please.....

Mine are all standard with no performance mods.....but irrespective of whether they auto or manual, I find that that they are comfortable at 60 - 65 mph, although my manual S is more than happy at 70mph. My Mk1 2000 auto was also purring at 70mph, but my Mk1 2000 (manual o'drive) is happier at 60 -70mph! My early Mk2 2000 manual (but no overdrive) is happiest between 60 - 65.
It's a while since I've driven my PI's.....
But two identical cars (model, age, engine etc) can be totally different in the way they drive.
However, I appreciate they fact they are a 50+ year old car, and I drive them accordingly - not feeling the need to squeeze every ounce of power out of them!

Hi John.
Your last two short comments I totally understand and agree with. So with that in mind,in your opinion,I ought to be able to reach the mid - 60's (mph) without too much effort, so to speak. It should feel smooth, settled and not strained.
As a p.s. - when I mention ' mid 60's MPH I am talking actual MPH ( as in a speed app) - we have established that, via said 'phone app, my speedo reads ok-ish up to 30mph - after that it starts under-reading. I.E when my speedo reads around 50mph, the 'phone app reads 56mph.
This is quite important - I gather by now you have realised that I am still not happy with what is going on....
