SpeedNOmeter

#1 Post by iani » Fri Mar 03, 2023 12:56 pm

The speedo in my Mk1 Estate has been playing up since I bought it 3 months ago, at times it was fairly accurate, at other times it would swing +/- 15mph or so, occasionally it would die completely. I bought a NOS speedo cable on the basis that it was the cheapest part to swap out and worth a punt, nope, no difference. The angle drive appears to be working correctly and the speedo behaves correctly when I connect the old cable to it and spin it in my drill. This would suggest that the issue is within the speedo drive gear in the OD unit. My car has been retrofitted with MOD with an A-type OD, should I be able to fit another speedo drive pinion without removing the gearbox? the 'box & OD work well and I'd rather not pull them until I have to.

We fitted a new pinion drive today but there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the old one, checked the angle drive again and it wasn't turning, a quick root around produced a S/H spare and I now have a working speedo, not only working but accurate against GPS, a very good result.

Hello Iani,

very many years ago having experienced a couple of angle drive failures and the relatively high cost of a replacement I have, since then, drilled a hole in the tunnel and routed the cable directly into the gearbox, omitting the angle drive.

I have a similar problem, with the speedo constantly wavering around 10/15 mph either side of my correct speed. Time to buy a new angle drive!

Hello Badger,

surely that is more likely to be a defective cable?
