Tank cleaning

#1 Post by widget » Fri Nov 07, 2014 8:15 pm

As the tile says..prob is the tank is chucking out loads of rusty particles...have got an in line filter , just below the tank.. but it's only doing 60 odd miles before needing a change.. a right pain in the proverbial...so what are the options for cleaning/sealing the inside of the tank ??

I de rusted mine with a couple of pints of degreaser and a few big stones. Give it a good shake rattle and roll, got loads of rust out.
Then sealed it with tank sealer from frosts.

I researched this depth when I wanted to derust a Mk1 tank after years of inactivity. What Alan says is good, although make sure the tank sealant is suitable for fuels with a 'high' ethanol content. Some tank sealants can have a reaction with the ethanol in modern fuels, which is nasty stuff, and if ithe sealant doesn't bond 100%, and it starts parting company from the inside of the tank, you will end up with more problems than you started out with.
Ensure the inside of the tank is totally corrosion free before applying the sealant.....or if you can find one, I'd fit a replacement tank.

I was reading this topic with interest the other day and now my PI is playing up! I gave it a rare treat last night in preparation for a blast up to the NEC for the day - I almost filled the tank. I think I disturbed some rust towards the top of the tank and that's caused periodic loss of power during both drives today... I can tell you that it's very exciting to lose power whilst on the M40 or A34...in heavy traffic...at speed...

The damn thing coughed, spluttered then cleared its throat or simply stalled. I don't think its the Lucas pump, since that sounded fine during such episodes, and I don't think it's ignition failure, since it's sporadic and seems to fix itself, either whilst slowing down or after lots of cranking.

So, having conferred with Register members on the stand at the NEC, I've now got hints and tips for tank extraction and cleaning :D

Oh, and another thing - an indicator bulb blew! Naughty car!!!

Jim, I presume your first job will be to check and change the fuel filter in the boot?
