heater matrix valve

#1 Post by iggy » Thu Oct 18, 2012 6:50 pm

ok the heater matrix in my triumph 2000 mk2 has no hot water flowing through it so ive taken the parcel shelf out from the drivers side to get at the valve and found that the valve is stuck shut and will not turn, is there a way of removing the inner barrel of the valve? ive read on the forum that some one in the past has made a small puller to remove it but cant find any details, any help apreciated thanks in advance

Usual procedure is to remove the operating arm from the valve, re-insert the securing screw and use a pair of mole grips in the screw head to draw the valve centre away from the outer body. BUT, a well-seized valve can prove very tight and with use of force there is some risk (IMHO) of damage to the matrix at the point where the supply pipe is soldered to it.

I think the puller suggestion may have come from Andy Thompson in this thread - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2550

I guess that a longer screw of the correct thread allied to a short length of suitable diameter tube and some washers to act as thrust bearings between screw head and tube might suffice...?

You're welcome.

AFAIK, the 2000/2500 Mk2 matrix is the same as that of a Stag (non-air conditioned variety), so might be worth trying the Stag specialists (though I doubt that a new one will be cheap :( )

Failing that, possibly try for a good second-hand unit?

Just be aware that the entire heater assembly has to be removed and dismantled to replace the matrix

Good luck!

Also, as you've probably noticed, the valve body is brass, so I'd advise caution as to how much force you put on the screw if going the puller route in order to avoid the risk of stripping the threaded hole in the body, which will give you even more of a problem :(

yes ive noticed its brass, il see how it goes, i think i just sent you a pm by mistake any way i must say i was suprised at how well the car handled on A roads and motorways driving it back home, considering the age of it and all the rubber bushes look like they have never been replaced, also mentioned on the mot that they are perished but no movment found :)

Chris Witor sells replacement brass valves if required.

I overhauled my Stag heater (same unit as a MkII) for a weekend. cleaned, painted and new seals.
