I had some rear end noises which rapidly became worse. Last weekend, indeed with a little help fro Mike Stevens :-) , fitted a recon diff with new Cw & P from T.D. You need to have some confidence in your re-build skills - if the re-built piston isn't leaking then I'm sure it's fine and that there is still air trapped. It does, however, illustrate an issue. My present one is similar to what you have done, i.e. utilised another rear window heater switch for, say, front/rear fog lights or driving lights.
