If you search on here, there has been previous debates on this subject, although I can't remember the general consensus of opinion as to the correct or preferred fitment. I know that I have two manual cars with them fitted opposite ways though!

This all makes sense as it seems autos did have the bar whilst manuals had the fork, although my white manual PI did have the bar setup; maybe for clearance - at the diff end rather than the gearbox end. Having said that, I don't really see that it should make a great deal of difference as the welde...

It is open to the elements.
I usually spray some corrosion preventative wax in the space, such as Bilt Hamber Dynax 50, whenever I have the springs off (easier access).

I have some used Mk2 seat runners tucked away in the garage - I can check tomorrow for you if you wish. I can also look for the front tread plate that you previously mentioned as well, if you have not been able to straighten your existing one out!
