Re: Rebuilt engine smoking on start up
Hi, Definitely not normal, like johnnydog suggests, water getting into the cylinder(s) giving you steam in the exhaust. What was the reason for the rebuild - Anything that might have resulted in a cracked cylinder head ? A hairline crack can be barely visible and may have gone unnoticed by whoever r...

Re: Acceleration stops at 50mph - max speed=50mph
Hi Matrix, Good to hear the positive result. The check for correct mixture is as I described in my earlier post, so if your engine speed remained constant you are there. If you do decide to alter the mixture, you should again check that the air valve (piston) falls freely to make sure the metering n...

Re: Acceleration stops at 50mph - max speed=50mph
Best way to learn, your own knowledge is essential if you intend to keep it longer term. With respect, many Mechanics these days are more used to modern vehicles, which are very different in terms of fuel and ignition systems. These beauties are a dream to work on by comparison and were built to las...

Re: Acceleration stops at 50mph - max speed=50mph
So far so good then - and a confidence builder if nothing else. Just tipping the carbs over may have dislodged any particles in the needle valves. A particle hardly visible can just hold open enough to flood, but is too big to pass the needle. If you didn't put the new ones in, or thoroughy backflus...

Re: Acceleration stops at 50mph - max speed=50mph
Hi Matrix, Have some confidence - we all have to start sometime, but yes take the two off together complete with linkage, just be careful when you are moving them about. Better to loosen the top diaphragm screws while still in the car to save struggling with them on the bench. Also have something to...

Re: Servo Hissing
Hi, The air valve I was referring to is the one inside the servo unit itself, not the Non Return valve. As Mike says it vents to the cabin so the hissing would be audible inside. It may be a reconditioned servo, but there is always the chance of a Friday afternoon one. Other than substitution, not s...

Re: Servo Hissing
Hi Ian, With a direct acting servo there shouldn't be any air movement through the servo when at rest. Both chambers should be under equal manifold vacuum, but no air movement. Hissing on tickover implies a faulty air valve allowing a bleed of atmospheric air to pass through the chambers (and hence ...

Re: MkI Leather Seats refurbishment
Hi Richard, I have just looked in that area - was it RJ Turner Car Trimming ? If so, the Website Gallery shows some impressive work, but good to get a review from personal experience. I have several other front seats that all need more repair work than I can tackle. They are Mk2 Black Vinyl, might g...

Re: MkI Leather Seats refurbishment
Hi, I recently looked for someone that would do a repair on my vinyl driver seat cover, but as you say not much about. Aldridge Trimming offer complete vinyl covers for the 2000 seats, but a pair is pushing £500. They say they have specialists that can trim to customers requirements including leathe...

Re: A few pics of KNG
Nice job, but a vital ingredient looks to be missing - Grease. Saviour of my wagon survived 50 yrs exposed to the Rigours of Nature (and the dreaded road salt). Having said that I have done my share of underbody repairs, but swear by the grease bucket. Always assume that I will be the one having to ...
