Hi Peter, It sounds like a loose connection on the starter motor to me. The big heavy cable goes from the battery to the starter post, and all the power take off for the car is taken from this post. Its a nut, that might just need nipping up. Worst case, the thread on the stud might have been stripp...

Charles,
That is such sad and tragic news, Matt did indeed help our club greatly in setting up our original website and running it for many years.
Thank you for posting this, huge shame.

Steering column upper bearing - replace in situ?
Chris, Stag column different, ignore that. Are you sure the bearing had broken, very unusual too. Play in the top of the column is usually due to the outer column skipping down the inner column a bit. Undo the column adjuster, then undo the nut a few turns on the adjuster to make it slack. Grab hold...

Mot exemption from next year!
It does say that changes to a vehicle completed prior to 1986 will be deemed as being original, so providing you can proves the changes were made early on it then becomes a VHI and qualifies.

What a plonker!
It's behind the n/s boot hinge. Pull off the black Earth wire to bypass it and all should be well.
