Phantom Overheating!
Just over a year ago, before lock-down, I purchased a 1967 Mk.1 saloon and as I drove it home - about 90 miles- the temperature gauge reached about 95% towards the top. However, when I stopped to investigate, there was no sign of overheating and everything appeared normal so I continued my journey and made it home. On investigation, the radiator appeared new but the flow didn't seem great so we changed the water pump to no effect; next we changed the temperature sender; then the thermostat and still no change. This car has the later black faced instruments and as I had a spare unit I changed the temperature gauge and it read exactly the same. The car had been converted to negative earth so I tried a temperature gauge from a late MK.2 just in case, but that also showed the same. We had fitted a Kenlowe fan to the car and that cuts in and out as it should! The temperature gauge does not just shoot up to the top, it progresses as you would expect as the engine warms up. It is almost as if there is a resistor missing out of the circuit but I cannot see one in the wiring diagram in the workshop manual. So I've run out of ideas! There is no boiling over or steam coming out and the car drives fine but I don't want to drive it long term with what I believe to be a mis-reading temperature gauge. Unfortunately I do not have a thermometer I can stick in the radiator to check water temperature but as I said the Kenlowe is starting and stopping as it should which implies the temperature is normal. I suspect a problem with the negative earth conversion where something has been wrongly connected. Anyone else had this problem or have any ideas how I might get the gauge to read accurately? Thanks.

Does your fuel gauge read correctly? I would suspect the voltage stabiliser which is screwed onto the back of the speedo. Item 17 on the positive earth wiring diagram.

Having not done that many miles in the car, I'm not sure but the petrol gauge does not stay at max but it may be over-reading. Second gauge did the same but I guess there is nothing stopping 2 voltage stabilisers failing! I will investigate. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello Gowerowl,
no, both gauges are being fed from the same source. it the stabiliser that is (probably) defective or bypassed that is why both gauges will read high. The nominal voltage from the stabiliser is 10 volts, and you can buy more stable solid state ones I believe?

Sorry when I said both stabilisers I meant on the 2 separate gauges I had tried. Thanks for the suggestion - I will test it and try the suggested links for a solid state alternative.

I've purchased one of the stabilisers from the eBay link and it arrived next day. Looks to be good quality and vendor supplied contact details if I needed any advice. Right now I just need smaller hands to get up behind the dashboard and get the cluster out so I can fit the new stabiliser!!! Probably won't get done until next week now but I will update this thread with the results.
