Nice job! Would it not be worth fitting a larger CSA earth return wire to each headlight units the light CSA earth used just now will run around the houses before it goes to earth.It would cut down on your negative /earth resistance.

You can’t see from the pictures, but each of the individual light has a separate earth lead. I like the idea of running lines directly back to the Battery earth. Something for the future perhaps.

Hello Chris,

as the erath lead is very short you won't lose any appreciable voltage across it. I wouldn't bother with an earth back to the battery. The body is such a large cross sectional area that it has negligible resistance.

There have been posts in the past that extol the advantages of fitting relays to the headlights. Calculations and measurements have shown that the light output can be improved by up to 30%! I have them fitted to my PI with a small fuse/relay plate fitted to one RH strut nut with the connections taken from the loom running down the RH inner wing. Power can come from the starter motor, also on that side.

I also fitted H4/H1 headlamps complete with nightbreaker + bulbs. That combination, together with the relay mods, provides the best headlights I've ever had!

The current H4/H1 headlamps have some cheapo Halfrauds bulbs. But I fitted Osram Nightbreaker + bulbs to my Stag before the last RBRR. I agree best headlights ever (at least without going to HIDS or LEDS.

Co-owner Martin fired up the Custard Tart today and took her out for a drive, her first run since we did the cylinder head, carbs and dizzie rebuild. Also since we switched the rear springs and differential. He planned on a short 4ish mile loop but was enjoying himself so much that he ended up taking a 23 mile detour. He reports that she’s fast, comfortable (new seats) and quiet. The car handled well on its new tyres, though the non-power steering was a little heavy at manoeuvring speeds.

The carbs definitely need setting up and balancing, as it was difficult pulling away from traffic lights around town.

The biggest niggle is a vibration - not heard or felt, but if you watch the rear view mirror you can see that something is vibrating. Has anyone had a similar problem that can give any advice?

Usually, when the interior mirror (or headrest if fitted) vibrates, it is at the back end of the car. Although they are new tyres, I may be tempted to get the tyre place recheck the balancing of the rear wheels or check them for any deformity in the rim (ie up and down movement). Years ago, I had an S alloy on the front which always had a slight vibration felt through the steering, yet it was checked for balance and was on '0'. The issue turned out to be the rim was slightly out of true presumably from a pothole type of impact to the inside rim edge causing a slight 'up and down' movement. A different alloy wheel cured the slight vibration.
The next port of call for me would be to turn one end of the propshaft through 180 degrees (the rear end if an auto)
I'd start with the easiest or cheapest option first...!

If you can have a look underneath, check the weld around the diff extension where the 4 bolt fitting is welded to the tube. Had a similar vibration on my 2500 some years ago. Before the weekend when I was going to have a look, went over a railway crossing , lost drive and oil everywhere when the weld broke. I,ve since reinforced mine. :shock:

We dropped Rusty into a local body shop and asked them to give us an estimate. Today we went back with fingers crossed. Overall not too bad except the front wings. Does any one know whether there are repair panels available for the bottoms of the front wings and valences? She’s a PFL Mk2?
