Loss of compression

I have posted this on a big saloon Facebook group, but it idoesn't appear to be the right place for the answers I'm after.

Lost all compression on cylinder 1 and after taking off the cylinder head it seems that the valve seat has disappeared from the exhaust valve, the inlet valve doesn't look right either. This is a big valve 218225 head, did they have valve seat inserts from new?

I have a 219016 head as spare but the question is can I run this in standard form with the 2000 block I have? Block is ML547HEA and has +.030 flat top pistons.

I can't help with an answer to your question, but I would suggest contacting Chris Witor who is probably one of the most knowledgable in this subject, and may be able to give you the answers / information you require.

Johnnydog's answer is an excellent one, but you could also try taking the head to a local engine reconditioner who would be pleased to help I'm sure.

The other head you have (219016) is a 2.5 head (and reckoned to be 'the best'!) but I believe that the 2000 equivalent is 219015. If you look at Chris's website on his technical pages-

he lists the heads there and their normal application. The difference between 219015 and 219016 is mainly in head height (and pushrod length) The height difference being 75 thou would suggest that is the amount to have skimmed off to make it suitable for a 2000. I did this a good few years ago but before Chris had listed this information, so I calculated it all by hand!
