Auto oil cooler as engine oil cooler?

#1 Post by trolleybus » Mon Mar 11, 2019 12:21 am

I am converting to the manual box.
So I am left with the auto oil cooler now being redundant.
I have a spin on oil filter which seems to have provision for an oil cooler.
The question is can I drill and tap and fit outlets to the spin on oil filter body and use the auto box oil cooler as an engine cooler?
With a temperature sensor of course.
Or will the engine oil pressure be to great for the auto cooler?

Why do you need an engine oil cooler ? Are you going racing ?

Hi there,
With my last "67 2000 automatic,I changed it to manual/overdrive.I left the 3.7:1 diff in,and adapted the transmission oil cooler to suit.If I remember right,I got two hoses made up with suitable ends to fit the cooler, and fitted the other ends by hose clips onto a sandwich block between filter and engine block. Never gave me any cause for concern, and that was with very "spirited driving" while towing stock cars or bangers at an alarming rate. Just give the cooler a good flush out first, all will be fine.

While I wouldn't disagree with Bill, I've always thought that the transmission cooler would be a bit narrow bore for an engine cooler and might reduce the oil flow. Now, I've never tried it or even done some research on relative cooler bore sizes!

I have, however, thought of using a transmission oil cooler in bypass mode, that is via separate tappings into the sump, draw oil from the sump into the cooler and return via it's own (electric) pump. Just an idea that one sometimes has!

Cheers,
Mike.
