Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
My T 2000 has an old Kenlow fan fitted, but partially disconnected. I have never been a fan of the Kenlow ‘sensor up the top hose’ way of measuring temperature and although using a modern temperature switch in a top hose adaptor is my fall back position (a la Revotec), I was wondering whether anyone has used one of these thermostat housings with the temperature gauge sensor port in, and then fitted rad fan temp switch in that?
If yes, how did it work out? I know that I’ll need an adaptor to fit a modern metric threaded switch, I guess my real question is whether the temperature at the back of the thermostat is really any different from the temperature at the radiator inlet - would it make a difference to the temperature setting in the fan switch?
Second question - where can I find a thermostat housing with the temp sensor port - I can’t find them listed on any of the regular Triumph parts websites?

Re: Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
I think that's the difference between the 2000 and the 2500 thermostat housings.
The 2000 has the port in the alloy top cover, and senses the temperature after the thermostat. The 2500 has the sensor in the water pump, so senses the temperature before the thermostat.
The result is the 2000 temperature gauge shows no reading while the engine is warming up, only once the thermostat has opened. The 2500 shows the temperature as it warms up.
As to whether you really want to regulate the radiator temperature with reference to that of the engine, that's an old argument I've disagreed over before!

Re: Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
That’s great Clifford. My engine has the 2500 arrangement for the temp sensor, so if anyone has the 2000 type with the sensor in the thermostat housing going spare, I’m happy to talk beer tokens.

Re: Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
I assume the two are interchangeable?
Re: Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
Yes the bolt pattern is common across lots of Triumphs, including Herald, Spitfire, GT6, Vitesse, TR6 etc.

Re: Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
Far be it for me to disagree with Clifford, but I have had both 2000s and 2500s and the temperature sensor has always been threaded into the (normally cast iron) water pump housing just in front of the thermostat pocket. I agree that the thermostat housing top cover (where the radiator top hose connects) seems to have a blank area where a hole and thread could be fitted, but I've never seen one like that.
So, as far as I am aware, the temperature sensor has always been the engine side of the thermostat (in the water pump housing), rather than the radiator side, on 2000, 2500 (and GT6/Vitesse, TR5/TR6 etc).
As far as a fan temperature switch, I too have never been a fan of the 'stick it under the hose' method either! The ideal would be an in-line device in the top hose that would take a thermal switch. Or maybe something stuck in the radiator - with care! Or maybe have a boss soldered onto the radiator top tank, the latter probably being the best solution.
Cheers,
Mike.

Try Revotec who do such an item, fitting instructions below.Mike Stevens wrote: ↑Mon Jan 14, 2019 11:54 amThe ideal would be an in-line device in the top hose that would take a thermal switch.

Re: Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
Yes I have the Revotec system on my Stag, with the switch in the top hose, I wanted to avoid that too.
If I can find a thermostat housing either with the extra port already drilled/tapped or undrilled, that would be great. I can drill/tap/adapt as neccessary.
I am probably being way too anal, but I want to a) minimise the number hose joints, b) make it look like Triumph intended it that way.
Chris Witor has said he’ll see if he has an old one, so fingers crossed.

Re: Thermostat housing - with temp sensor port
I think that would be ideal as it will sense the temperature on the radiator side of the thermostat. Until the thermostat opens you're not really bothered as the engine isn't up to temperature. Once the thermostat has opened, then the temperature either side of the thermostat should be the same. Assuming the thermostat is working OK that is!
When you say 'thermostat housing' I assume you mean the top bit as in your picture? I should have some around too if Chris can't find you one.
Cheers,
Mike.
