Newbie says hello

#1 Post by Carboy0 » Thu Nov 01, 2018 5:03 pm

Hi Carboy0 here,

I’m looking for my first 2000 or 2500, I have a Stag TV8 Man OD which I love, but the lure of a four door is too great to ignore.

I have had a look on EBay and Facebook Marketplace and have been to view several but they are either more work that I am prepared to undertake or just plain nasty.

Ideally I’d like a manual overdrive 2500 TC, S or PI, but a 2000 TC could be an option.

My budget is no more than £3.5k for something ready to go, or less with the budget to bring it up to snuff. Not being into these cars previously can I ask if this is a sensible budget.

If anyone knows of a car available, please feel free to message me.

Welcome fellow Stagite. Your budget looks about right. As in all models the poor outweigh the good. Luckily a member, Lloyd, has put the effort in to have repair panels re-produced.

Happy hunting!

Being a Stag owner, you will have a good idea on where the 2000 rusts, and have the ability to spot a good genuine car from one tarted up for sale.
Areas prone to corrosion - w/arches, inner wings, sills (inner and outer especially at the front and rear), front floor pan by the sills and above the outriggers, under the back seat, subframe mountings where they attached through the floor (especially in facelift models), bottom of the windscreen, boot floor and rear of rear w/arches, and the rest is visual really. Make sure the seams in the front panel, front and rear valance, and rear end of the sill to rear w/arch is still there, not smoothed over with filler. It's worth familiarising yourself with the correct wheelarch profiles before you look at cars - the Mk1 and Mk2 are different, and different again from the Stag (although the Mk1 and Stag are not dissimilar). The Mk2 estate had a MK 1 rear end and therefore the MK 1 rear wheelarch profiles.
At the front of the sill where the front wing attaches, there should be a a strengthener plate between the lower part of the wing and inner sill and there should be a gap at either side of it. If not it probably will have been welded over. A good indication of previous sill work is the obviously lip where the outer sill meets the bottom of the sill will be missing along the whole length of the sill, or just on the area where the plate has been welded.
It's worth remembering that pre 73 cars had better metal, and are less prone to corrosion. The last models produced were the worst, and the metal used was virtually rusting before it was even pressed into body panels or a shell!
It's difficult to outline everything, but a genuine original car is worth waiting for, and will jump out at you immediately.
Unfortunately, there are 2 cars on your wish list (the S and PI) which are the most sought after and good ones now command decent prices.
If you find a possible car, I'm certain there will be plenty of advice forthcoming if you ask.

Thanks Johnnydog,

That’s really useful, got a 1971 car to look at next week, so your notes will really help.

Test drove a 1971 Mk2 2000 TC Man OD last weekend and have now bought it. Mechanically fairly sound, welding to floor pan and jacking points done. Rear wheel arches a little frilly. Clonk/knock from one of the half shafts on overrun to be investigated, also very small amount of play in non power steering - are the racks adjustable at all?

Let the fun begin.

Interested in what Lloyd has had produced, is there a link to lists/pictures?

Welcome to the big six saloon club having taken the plunge. With your concern with the knock might be worth checking the universal joints in the drive shafts for wear. However the torque from acceleration would make it clonk as well.

In addition to the advice from Ross, it's worth checking that the drive shaft splines are not dry, and have no rotational play. They should be greased (I use a CV joint grease on mine) as the splines of the joint move in and out as the suspension goes up and down.
Its also common to get a momentary 'spline lock' during a rapid gear change from 2nd to 3rd under firm acceleration, which feels like the back end twisting slightly to the offside.
