Am I right in thinking that the two square slipper pads are missing here, or does this later bearing carrier not use them?

When they're installed, should they be greased? Weirdly the workshop manuals make no mention of them, nor are they shown in the exploded diagram of the clutch release mechanism...

A bit of a delay - and I nearly missed this. When I looked closely at the bearing carrier this morning there are two cracks on opposite sides of the carrier where the fork prongs sit. Looks like perhaps the lack of slipper pads has caused additional stress on the carrier which has fatigued and fractured over time - either that or the last person to press the bearing into place did something silly:
Took bugger all effort to pull the cracked bit away from one side of the carrier - looks like this was very close to failure.
