Correct clutch kit?

#1 Post by Llessur » Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:57 am

Rimmer Bros have provided the following for my '77 2500S (J-type OD gearbox) - is it correct? I can only find it listed for the Dolly, which is also what it says on the box. The Rimmer Bros part number I ordered is very different (GCK282)...

I am not really sure, but it is curious that Rimmers list the three part kit as different part numbers for the Sprint (RT1069) and the 2000 range (GCK282) and at different prices. It would appear to me that they would not be the same. I always get my clutch kits from CW.

Last time I replaced the clutch on my 'S' (in 2006), I used a Laycock cover, with a Unipart GCP177AF (asbestos free) plate.
Gave a lovely light clutch, mid way biting point, and trouble free changes.
If you fit the Borg & Beck cover and plate, then I understand (and I will stand corrected on this point of view) that this combination can give a heavier clutch pedal with a lower biting point. I personally like a lighter clutch, and a mid way biting point.
At the moment the box is out of my 'S' due to an oil leak from the overdrive mating gaskets, and I will be replacing the clutch whilst it is out again with either a full Laycock kit, or a Laycock cover with a B&B plate, depending what I have in the depths of my garage! But definitely a Laycock cover.

Cheers for the replies. I have since found a vehicle application list on the manufacturer's website (www.raicamclutch.com/pdf/vehicle_applications.pdf) which shows this is suitable for the 2000/2500 so hopefully it should do the job. It also lists the kit as being suitable for various other Triumphs - certain Dolomites - 1.8s & 2.0 depending on year, all GT6 and all Vitesse. CW lists the same clutch part numbers for the GT6 and Vitesse as the 2000/2500 so this looks about right.

It's an AP Driveline kit (which I was recommended by a couple of sources, albeit locally, not UK - AP Driveline are now owned by Raicam apparently) and I it's a multi-riveted jobby like the CW kit, not a three-rivet version. The spline certainly has the right number of teeth so that's a start.

Time will tell I guess...

Here's a couple of pics of the clutch, just in case anyone else is wondering what the Rimmer's clutch is like - will update later as to whether it fits.

Must admit I am with Charles on this.

Always go to CW for stuff because he must be the most knowledgeable person around for our cars and he would have it right.

If he has not got it, it probably is not available or suitable!

Following on from the above (and yes, I should have bought everything from CW in the first place) - just out of curiosity, has anyone had any issues with replacement clutch release bearings being slightly too large for the bearing release carrier?

I bought a new carrier from Chris Witor as my old one had fractured and also have a new release bearing which I got as part of the aforementioned AP Driveline kit from Rimmers.

My understanding was that the bearing was an interference fit on the carrier, however it can be pushed onto and pulled off of the carrier by moderate hand pressure. I presume this is wrong.

I did think about using a dab of Loctite to hold it in place on the carrier but have opted to buy a new bearing from CW instead so hopefully once that arrives the project should be back on track.

I was just interested to see if anyone else had experienced this issue…
