Probably been asked before but the only thread I could find with the search was from many eyars ago now.
What do people recommend? I want one where the poles are in the right place, that is, next to the inner wing positive at the front of the engine.
Mine's a mark 2 2000 and I am happy to go for more than the minimum needed in cranking power etc
Battery recommendations?

Re: Battery recommendations?
Mine's the other way round - positive at the back close to the starter solenoid, negative at the front close to the engine earthing point.
But terminals definitely near to the wing.
In general I think it's always better to get the biggest battery that will fit in the space and that the clamp will hold.

Re: Battery recommendations?
The earth mounting point on the engine on mine is between the distributor and the ballast resistor.
The power cable runs along the engine subframe and then abck down the offside of the engine to the starter.
So, it's logical the positive is at the front and negative at the back. No reason why the wiring shouldn't be different on different cars though but it does affect the battery because of where the terminals are.
Well I have bought a Lucas branded 096R so it should look right and it should fit too if my measurements are anything like right.

Re: Battery recommendations?
I think it was me who originally posted about a 96R battery. I spent some time looking at the various sizes and came across a 96, but it had the terminals round the wrong way! Luckily the 96R (R for reversed maybe?) fitted the bill and has done very well since, even after occasionally going flat!
It fits the early Mk2 very well, but the later Mk2 cars (with the engine moved to the left a bit) have a smaller battery tray and I'm not sure it will fit there.
Mine's a 1971 car and it's fine in that so should be OK in your 1969 2000.
One thing I would recommend is to fit 2 new high-current cables direct from the alternator to the battery, one for Positive and the other for Negative. This gives a lower resistive path between the alternator and battery and that will help to keep the battery better charged. The negative cable might sound a bit odd, but the currents from the alternator can be very high and when you think about all those slightly dirty metal to metal contacts a new cable makes good sense.
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Battery recommendations?
Mike,
Interested in your comments. Where would you put the earth cable on the alternator ?
Tony.

Re: Battery recommendations?
Hi Tony,
Mine's not got an original alternator (an uprated one when I bought the car). I fitted it to one of the mounting bolts/studs. It just helps to lower the loop resistance between battery and alternator.
Cheers,
Mike.
