Re: What does this button do?
Noted, thanks.
Re: What does this button do?
From the somewhat limited view of the rear, it possibly looks like a rotary switch rather than a pull switch. If so, maybe a replacement for a faulty dash lights rheostat switch? But if a pull switch, maybe a replacement for a faulty interior light switch?
It shouldn't be too difficult to follow the wiring to get an idea where they come from / go to, should it?

Re: What does this button do?
My friend is still beavering away at getting the engine running. I expect he'll follow up on this button once the 'bigger' things have been sorted out. I have not driven the car for twenty-one years so my memory is a bit hazy, but I remember that the interior light worked, from a toggle on the dash, I think, when I put it away.
Impressive collection, by the way, johnnydog. My dad had a Mk2 PI in the mid-seventies in Holland, and later a 2500S.

and if its an Auto box yes start is inhibited and generally will only start in
Park or Neutral, never in 1.2 or D or R

Did you ever solve what this switch/button doesBlokland wrote:I have finally trailered my 2000 Mk1 from France to Sussex and a friend is trying to get it running again after 20 years of storage. He came across a small knob below the steering column on the left, and asks what it's for. I can't remember using it, can't remember what it's for.
Can someone help out?

Re: What does this button do?
reading through this post, and your asking if the car has to be in neutral to start, could it be a "start inhibit" switch, to isolate the starter solenoid, or alternatively to isolate the ignition side of things?
I'm sure you have found it's function by now, but we are still curious(or just plain nosey!!
Good luck,

Re: What does this button do?
The car is running now, and my friend discovered the switch kills the engine. I don't yet know how it does that, but I will ask.
Re: Starter only in 'Park'
The starter should only work in the PARK and NEUTRAL positions.Blokland wrote:Another quick question: does the gear selector have to be in the 'Park' position for the starter to work?
