my original key with the rubbery/plastic end with BL symbol on it has just broken apart. can you still get NOS blank ones or does someone have one they don't need?

A decent locksmith key cutting place should be able to do a new key but without the BL plastic bit.

I always thought the original keys for the MK2 were Wilmot Breedon or Union which didn't have the 'rubbery' cover. The 'rubbery' covers were usually with BL cars such as the Allegro (ugh), Marina (double ugh) and the Mini etc (one good car in that lot...). I would suggest that it has probably had a replacement previously, hence the 'rubbery' cover. A trip to an autojumble may get you the correct blank, which you have to have cut for a MK2. Mk1's have the key nos on all keys, Which you see on auto jumbles, but the Mk2 key nos are only on the boot / glove box as you know, so for a Mk2 you will need a blank unless you have the actual key number from the original round tab supplied when the car was new, in which case you can get a key of the original style cut from the number. Sorry if I'm stating what you already know.....

I'm with you on this John, I've never seen an original mk2 key with a plastic/rubbery fob, this is what they originally looked like.

If it's the original locks the key number might also be recorded on the factory records. The key number was on the additional notes bit of the heritage certificate from my last car.

you will never guess.........ive found a spare key taped to the back of the glove box next to the flasher relay which I changed today! god knows how long its been there, so I don't have to get one cut. it hasn't got the plastic BL end to it tho.

Get another one cut and hide it somewhere on the outside of the car :roll: I've got one cable tied to the front suspension. It's of little use if it's inside a locked car....(ask me how I know ) :x

Keys in the front of the car isn't a problem as you can break in through the front quarter light windows pretty easily without causing damage. You need two tools, one to press the button in and one to flick the latch up. Fairly stiff sail battens work quite well although other tools such as sticks and bits of wire will do if you're not parked down at your local sailing club!
The problem occurs if you lock your keys in the boot (on a saloon at least). Therefore it might be sensible to hide a boot key under the car (which is smaller so easier to hide) and then put a spare ignition key in the boot.
