Mk2 Front Wings.

#1 Post by Steve G » Sun Feb 10, 2013 10:28 am

I have been reading the various posts on here about wing repair panels and the possibility of getting some new ones made and was wondering if anyone had looked into what was involved in getting this done.

What I understand is that Earlpart have the only press tool to make these, is this an original Triumph tool ? I spoke to them more than a few years ago about new supply of the panels and was told they were in the process of getting a building and press tool sorted out and as far as I know this is still the case.

Unless Earlpart are involved it would either mean getting a new press tool made or possibly getting someone to make each panel by hand. I spoke to Mark Field years ago about the Le Mans Spitfire bonnet he had made for his car. I think this is how he got the alloy one made.

Does anyone out there have any brand new factory wings or reproduction ones not fitted to a car that could be used as patterns ? I've got a new drivers side front section that could provide the most complicated bit. I bought this at Stoneleigh many years ago to keep in stock I just wished I had bought some repair panels as well !

A lot of discussion on this recently, most of it in the Spares Group thread starting here:

Thanks for adding the link. I realised I was talking about the wrong company who has the press tool I've corrected it now.
Just goes to show how much I know about things

People were first told about the new press shop building 4 years ago and have been waiting ever since - and people are still being told, if they get replies to enquiries, that they will have to continue to wait until it is built ...... sometime in the future.

In the meantime cars have been scrapped either for their good wings - I have two pairs that I acquired, sadly, from people who have done precisely that for themselves but were selling up - or because there was no sign of any wings materialising for a car to be sorted so it was not worth selling/buying to restore.

Another point is that the non-existent wings/repair sections (unless someone can prove me wrong) are now listed in the Earlpart catalogue at £614 for a full wing, £301 for a half wing, and £158 for the wheel arch repair with front and rear lower corners. The £1218 for a pair of wings would typically constitute over half the value of a PI and nearly all the value of a 2000 at present prices, though logic dictates that in most cases wing repair sections will do adequately and this would be the logical route.

While the ideal situation would be wings made on the original press tooling it is unlikely to happen for some considerable time and enquiries have been made about re-manufacture with some success. This will be something on the agenda at the proposed spares group meeting at Stoneleigh.

By the way both my pairs of wings are earmarked for cars - sorry.

Thanks Ted.
The reason I asked is anyone had any wings was to measure them and produce some proper CAD drawings.

I dare say that a lot of the cars around have been repaired in the past, plus it would be easier to get a panel near some measuring equipment than a whole car.

I guess most things have already been discussed I was just interested in what the situation is now.

I have been wondering about the possibility of getting repair sections fabricated, either from scratch or by using something like the Volvo 240 arch which is said to be close in shape.

While it would be nice to have CAD drawings available the problem is getting someone to produce them for free. Also the people who make the wings tend to do them by hand using templates, though if order numbers justified it some may no doubt have facility for making a tool (hard rubber?) for which a CAD drawing would be useful.

As for originals, both my sets of wings are good original take-offs.

Chris Witor has been supplying the Volvo 240 arch which is the correct profile (cross section) but requires a lot of work (cutting and shutting) to get the curve of the wheel arch itself. Chris advises me that this source of repair panel is now drying up because the main producer of them is dropping production.

This seems to be the case with lots of cars. I'm involved with Volvos as I have a 940, I also have an Astra and panels for that are starting to get difficult to find from what people have said.

Another thought I have just has was to modify a MK1 wing. Not good news for Mk1 owners though.

Whats the situation with MK1 wings there used to be quite a lot around.

It might be worth talking to these guys

http://radfordpanel.co.uk/tr2000.htm

They claim to be able to make MKII wing panels, by hand.

I had some sills off them about 10 years ago, and they fitted!

Thanks for the link. Thats the sort of thing I was thinking of. I wondered if the cost of getting some made like this would end up similar to getting some proper pressed ones.
I wonder what they use as a pattern ?

There is a company near to me who specialise in building street rods etc who do this sort of thing, perhaps it's worth making a few phone calls.

I have a feeling that I ought to be sitting down when talking money though !
