Hi again folks! Im going to start sill removal this weekend. What I need to know is, is it OK to raise one side of the car to do this work. I havent restored a conventional monocoque before and don\'t want to bend anything !
Thanks in advance,
Jim

Hello Jim,

I have done it that way without any problems, supporting the car on the
main front chassis rail and the rear subframe mount (outer)

Have a look inside the car along the inner sill and floor joint. This often needs repairing, unfortunately.
Thank you again Alec!
Yes, the front floors need a few repairs but they\'re not bad enough to warrant replacement. The front floor stiffeners also need to be replaced so I\'ll probably visiting earlpart in the near future!
Regards
James

Hi Jim
I have replaced sills this way without any bother too. Make sure that the inner membrane is sound too.

Brian,
Will do!. The previous owner fitted a skin sill having been quoted £800 to repair the one side correctly. I had a quick poke through the inner sill and could feel the membrane moving. I expect that this is rotten. I think my main problem will be knowing where to stop with the repairs!

Jim

Harold,
Thanks for the link. Sorry for the late reply (been away on holiday)! Well.... removing the outer sill revealed plenty of rust flakes and very little metal. The inner membrane is shot as is the inner sill. I have ordered an inner membrane with nose section, outer skin sill, jacking points, cross member and rear wing repair. I will patch the floors where necessary. I think the rear spring support is OK though there is some corrosion around the edges where it meets the floor. What I\'m planning on doing is removing the nearside 1/2 subframe as the floor is shot here also. I\'m trying to make these repairs as neat as possible so I need this out of the way! What I\'d like to know is is OK to remove the 1/2 rear subframe and support the car on the spring mount?
Regards
James

Keep checking the way the doors fit as you go. I usually find a jack across the front outrigger - Chassis Rail allows me to adjust the front door fit.
My normal route is two axle stands in line with the diff and two axle stands on the front suspension cross member. Then a jack on the front out rigger to correct any sag.

What a weekend! I managed to remove 1/2 of the rear suspension including the subframe. The rear of the car is supported on the crossmember behind the diff. The doors open and close fine!
Amazingly the only trouble I had was the exhaust (had to cut it) - all of the other bolts were easily removed. I had a marathon session with the grinder and most of the rot is now removed. Looking forward to the welding!
Will let you know how I get on!
Regards
James

Have you cut off the lower part of the front wing? The bit that covers the sill. This is where the majority of the damage comes from caused but water running down the inside wing and the rotting out the front of the sill.
I like the idea of sealing the wing - windscreen surround to stop the cause of this.
