The only way is to have a look. Crunchy = a nice choclate bar or hassle and expense. :( either way you need to see what the problem is to be able to make a decision as to what to do next. Weld repairs, fill and paint or just fill and hide with another vynyl roof. If it is rusty it means that the damp has got underneath the lining in any case! :?

Time to strip

The plan was always going to be to have a vinyl roof, if thats how it came from the factory then thats how it will stay!

I am going to fit a modern full size sunroof tho :D and leccy windows, maybe leccy seats too but I haven't seen any I like.

Presumably the hazards of welding repairs are, setting fire to the car, and, ruining the roof, goody. Lets just hope theres no holes.

Mine needs a new vinyl roof.. and has done for years.. it's all split down the seams. The good thing about this is I can see that there's no rust under it. :)

I was contemplating going with a black roof.. but the chances of finding anyone locally capable of actually fitting such a thing is pretty slim!

Apparently vinyl roofing was commonly fitted to ex-police (2.5 PI) cars where it made a rather good job of covering the holes in the roof.

My car is ex Vice squad, owned by the Chief constable then one of the detectives from Bethel st station in Norwich. So not actually owned by the police, interesting history nonetheless.

Mine's ex KCC - but there's no evidence whatsoever of any extra equipment being fitted, aside from the heavier-duty (Stag) gearbox. I've no idea what they used it for!

Is that Kent Police?? If so if you let me have the original registration, I will ask a friend in the Force to see if he can dig anything out

I have actually just emailed Bethel St station to see if they can give me the name of the Cheif constable who was there in 1977-81 or at least pass on my contact details.

I will let you know what happens :?

Hopefully I won't be thrown in prison for wasting police time

Yes, that's Kent police - Kent County Constabulary. Unfortunately, I've no idea what the original reg was - I know that it was with KCC from new until 1979, when it went to Whitstable and was re-registered as VGK957R at that time.

Having gone back a few posts I can see your car...... is it YSK 957R or VGK? Neither seem to be Kent registrations, the former I think may be a Scottish one! :?
