Red vinyl on a mk2

#1 Post by Llessur » Thu Sep 27, 2018 12:00 am

My car has a bit of a mismatched interior - I think it was originally bone velour but the seats and door cards have been changed to red vinyl ones. I'm pretty sure they're from a mk2 as they have the headrests.

I've not really seen any other mk2 2000s or 2500s with red vinyl. Was this quite rare, or perhaps something for the Aussie market only?

Red was a relative common interior with Mk1 models in the UK, but was it an option only on early Mk2 models. It was Matador Red, and was an option with white, green (?possibly?) and grey cars I recollect.
I have a 1970 sales brochure which shows a red interior in a white saloon.
It was available in vinyl or the half vinyl/ half bri-nylon.

IIRC, the Mk2 PI used by Motor magazine for their 1969 road test was grey with a red half/half interior. I have also seen at least one early Mk2 in green with a red interior, but cannot say whether or not the combination was original.

I don't think that the Matador Red interior remained a catalogued option on UK-built Mk2 saloons/estates for very long - possibly no later than 1972. Australia I can't answer for, but those are clearly Australian-pattern door cards...
