Hi All,

firstly apologies for asking a stupid question,

currently the estate has modern yellow/white number plates and i would like to swap them for period ones. now the silly question, should they be black/silver or black/white then raised/riveted numbers or pressed metal? any thoughts welcome

For a Mk1 Estate as I see your car is.

For vehicles registered before 1st January 1973. Taken from "The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 2001 No. 561 SCHEDULE 2"

1. A plate made of reflex-reflecting material complying with the requirements of the British Standard Specification for reflex-reflecting number plates published on 31 October 1967 under the number BS AU 145(3) and which displays black characters on a white background where it is fixed on the front of the vehicle and black characters on a yellow background where it is fixed on the rear of the vehicle.
2. A plate displaying white, silver or light grey letters and numbers on a black surface having every character indelibly inscribed on the surface or so attached to the surface that it cannot readily be detached from it, which may either—
(a)be made of cast or pressed metal with raised characters, or
(b)consist of a plate to which separate characters are attached, or
(c)consist of a plastic plate having either reverse engraved characters or characters of a foil type, or
(d)consist of an unbroken rectangular area on the surface of the vehicle which is either flat or, if there is no flat area where the mark is required to be displayed, an area which is almost flat.

My favourite topic!
Both my Triumphs have black background plates with raised riveted digits, one car with white digits, the other with silver, personally I think the white digits look marginally better, perhaps a bit more 'upmarket'! The pressed aluminium ones also look good, providing they are in the correct font for the age of the car, I have seen pressed ali plates in all sorts of 'wrong' fonts for the age of the car.
Here's some ideas, albeit a tad expensive for these, but they are in the correct style. Plenty more in Practical Classics and the like.

My preferences are for an aluminium plate on a car so silver on white, unless it is a rally car with the number plate stuck on the bonnet - as is legit and to original with the Landcrabs - white on black.

The ACE plates as supplied by Tippers are probably the most up market and certainly look good, imo,

I think the tin plate with the plastic raised lettering will keep things authentic
I have had a few cars with these and would suit your car too
