Estate Tailgate wont hold up anymore.

Has anyone any idea how to repair an estate tailgate that wont hold up anymore. Are there any parts available for them. It appears to have now also broken a metal rod piece inside. I will take the plastic cover off and have a look, but I feel its going to be a pain to fix. Any advice please. Many thanks Keith.

Hi Keith,

Not really!

The hinge is a spring torsion bar, sounds like it has snapped.

You can weld them back together, but I guess finding a use replacement would be best.

Perhaps someone on here might have one?

Ted Taylor I know has a scrap estate which might yield some?....... ted?

If you look on Mike Weaver's Blog (right hand side of this page) just after it came back from the paint shop he had to cut and re-weld this due to a cock up at the bodyshop............ this might give you some clues or even Mike might be able to give you some advice?

Good luck!

Ideally you need a new set of torsion bars = probably from an old written off estate.

remove the tailgate, and the trim over the hinges - before removing the tailgate - wedge the hinges so that they are not fully open

then remove the hinge carriers

the old torsion bars can then be removed from the hinges and replaced

it is detailed in the blog as Alan said - its a days work

Love to be able to help but I'm afraid that if the one that is on the estate is any good (and by no means certain because it is very rusty) I will need it for myself - sorry.

When I get it out in a day or so I will see what is involved in remanufacture because I believe there are a few people out there in need ....... and from what I hear a good one is a breakage waiting to happen :(

Getting them re-manufactured certainly would be a good move forwards.

I've often wondered about some type of telescopic strut too; even a good tailgate is easily blown shut in strong winds. I guess there are many struts that could fit but there would need to be an attachment plate/reinforcing sections added. Not something for a finished car but certainly do-able at restoration stage.

A broom handle will be good until a spring could be sourced.

Never had an estate, but should have thought about it, after all, the boot lid springs aren't in the boot lid on a saloon
