123 ignition tune distributor

#1 Post by GSouthee » Sun Jan 10, 2021 3:07 pm

Hi guys

I am currently having a sort out of the triumph engine in my AC.

It is currently 2.6 (+60 thou bore), running a slightly skimmed head, a piper TR65Pty ultimate road cam (284 duration), twin HS6's with BDM needles and yellow springs, 6 into 2 into 1 exhaust. Powerspark electronic dizzy.

I am thinking of trying the 123.igniton dizzy, has anyone had any joy with it. I was thinking of the usb tune model, has anyone found a suitable advance curve or know where to get them from.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers Gary

Hello Gary,

The Triumph curves are the basis for what you need, but because you are running a modified engine it may need slight tweaking. Other than using a rolling road, the old method of performance timing can be used. Most performance Triumph sixes use a 6-3-1 manifold which performs much better.

An alternative is to get your Lucas distruibutor set up by The DIstributor Doctor who has a lot of experience with Triumph engines and has all the spares and test equipment to set up a distributor. If you give him a call he can then advise.
Good luck,

Alec

Hi Alec

Yes I have the standard advance curve details, I just wondered if anyone had used the 123 ignition and if they had found any improved curves.

As I stated I have a powerspark electronic dizzy at the moment, so Dist Doc not much use.

I am using this particular tubular manifold as I could not fit the 6.3.1, though I am not sure there is much improvement by using the 6.3.1 from what I have seen unless in a race car situation.

Cheers anyway.

Hello Gary,

OK, I'm not familiar with the powerspark system, and I assumed it was an add on to the Lucas distributor.

I don't know if you'll find much agreement of your view on the 6-2-1 system though.

Hi Alec

My view is based on a tvr vixen that had 621 but changed to a 631 manifold at £500 plus only to get an extra 7hp and minimal acceleration benefit. It was running on HS6's. Surely not a great gain for such expense.

Anyway I've got to stick with existing manifold due to space available by steering box. One of the small problems when shoehorning engine into a 1949 AC.

I have ordered my 123 ignition so will update in due course.

It appears that not many answers on here indicate no-one has used it on their engine, though it seems quite popular on the TR6.

Cheers Gary

Ps Has anyone used bike carb conversion on their saloon? Looks like a nice setup by DanST engineering.

Just in the process of converting my 2500 powered mk1 saloon to efi. Plan to throttle bodies from triumph 675 motorcycles. In the early stages, have got the engine running with microsquirt ecu and edis ignition. Next step is to bite the the bullet and pull off the su's and fit the bodies and fuel system. Watch this space.
