Engine / chassis number

#1 Post by Sal » Tue Dec 29, 2020 5:40 pm

Hello folks,

I have a 1973 2.5 PI on carbs which I bought in various stats of repair (lots of half done jobs etc.)

Can anyone tell me via my engine and chassis numbers if mines a genuine PI or not?
Engine: MG78314E BW
Drivers side strut plate numbers: BCSR 168528
Passengers side strut plate numbers: comm no. M682770 DLO

Anyone?

Thanks in advance
Sal

Hello Sal

From your information your commission plate might be MG not M6 which MG is a Pi

From MG 75000 onwards was a decrease in BHP for the Pi 132 bhp to 125 bhp and the linkage was altered and the throttle bodies was changed from one vacuum/ balance pipe rails inlets to two.

The DLO at the end is factory manual overdrive.

However your engine has probably been replaced as the BW on your stamped engine number is for a factory Borg Warner Auto transmission.

Both numbers are period correct to the 125 bhp MG75000 onwards Pi.

The BSCR number I’m not sure 🤔 I’m sure someone will fill in the gap of my knowledge there.

The gearbox and Diff are stamped as well with Pi related prefix, I haven’t got this in front of me but I think the gearbox is MD and the Diff Is MG.

All the best Ross.

The BSCR is the body number which indicates saloon or estate (which should be reasonably obvious  ) but this is not recorded on any specific documentation relative to your vehicle. As far as I am aware, there is no record either which bodyshells/BSCR numbers were assigned to which vehicles by registration.
The body numbers were added during the shell manufacture (hence why the plate is painted in the body colour with no paint underneath it). The VIN / chassis plate was added during the vehicle assembly on the production line and were made with pre-stamped digits in blocks of ten, with the final digit of the chassis number and any options such as BW (Borg Warner), O (Overdrive) or P (PAS), being added by hand on the production line. That is why the last digit and any letters look 'skewiff'. The letters BW were subsequently substituted by a letter A on late models, and the letter P dropped on 'S' models as PAS was a standard fitment.

In my case it may be something to do with over 40 years of Triumph 2000 ownership! Some less knowledgable types have said 'anorak' is a more fitting word, but what do they know????
