Terrible rattle on start up.
Hi Guys, Hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy. I write again on this forum in the hope that someone could shed any light on a problem that I have at the moment, you have all been extremely knowledgeable before!
My Triumph had quite a bad rattle when starting which I always put down to where the exhaust goes over the top of the rear gearbox mount and put it on my list of to-do jobs. Yesterday I replaced my starter motor for a recon from Rimmer bros, which although was a pig to fit it went on fine. When I started it thereafter, the rattle was extremely loud and didnt stop like it usually would and can be heard to a degree when the engine is idling. My Dad had a listen with a stethoscope and seems unsure if it the exhaust (which I now agree as I have suitably braced it) and thinks its something dry or rattling within the area of the ring gear.
My triumph is a 2500 TC auto.
Has anyone got any ideas, any info will be greatly received!
Thanks in advance
Dan

Re: Terrible rattle on start up.
Autos flywheels are prone to developing cracks around the 4 mounting bolts to the crank, as they are of a much thinner metal construction than a manual flywheel. Hence why an auto has a much 'tinnier' sound when cranking than a manual.
As the change in noise is likely to be linked to your starter motor change, I'd be definitely looking at the flywheel, but its a gearbox out job to replace unfortunately.
You may be able to check it by removing the starter and applying some forward and back movement to the ring gear. If there is any movement with a ' cracking' or 'creaking' type of noise, then it is likely there are cracks in the metal around the mounting bolts.
CW does a reinforced version and his website may show you the area where your problem is likely to be.

Thanks a lot Johnny, exactly the advice I needed! Going to order one asap.

Aĺthough thats where I personally think your problem lies, I would be tempted to drop the box first just to verify the fault is with the starter ring gear before you fork out for a replacement!

Re: Terrible rattle on start up.
Be warned, I had a flexi plate crack when in the south of France once. By the time I got back to the Ferry it had taken out the spigot on the torque converter so I suggest you don't drive it until it's sorted. It was a tinny rattle.

Re: Terrible rattle on start up.
Three possible reasons for the rattle:
1: Have you fitted a spin-on oil filter adapter? With the original horizontal fitting the oil drains out on standing and with an engine showing much sign of wear the big ends can rattle away until the gaps are filled with oil.
2:The ring gear: whether an original ,or late model car with the pre-engaging starter, the chamferred teeth on the ring gear should face the front. On that later type the starter pinion engages from the rear, but its teeth are chamferred. My auto electrician said, that way, the teeth on both starter pinion and ring gear have more surface area in contact, so less wear.
3: When we bought our low-km (42000) 2500TC automatic in 2002 we noticed a clatter begin to appear at the rear of the engine, just on revving up from idling speed. The "experts" all said it
was a cracked flex plate, but it was found to be fine when the transmission was removed to check it.
To cut a long story short we discovered, by elimination, that the fault was in the viscous fan. The noise from it travelled along the crankshaft and came out at the back of the engine! A replacement fan was fitted and is fine after another 68000 km.
(My Warrant of Fitness garage man said the English invented the viscous fan coupling design and the Japanese engineers perfected it!)

Re: Terrible rattle on start up.
Hi everyone,
I ended up getting the new ring gear off Witor which has solved the problem. The one i took off doesnt look in too bad condition which was strange though. It then turned out the re-con starter motor i bought from Rimmer Bros is faulty so Iam now in battle with them to get my money back. This is the third faulty part theyve sold me in a year so I will try not to use them in the future! Thanks again for all your advice

Re: Terrible rattle on start up.
Glad you finally got your problem sorted in the end! Unfortunately, you are not alone with the problem you encountered with Rimmers. Whilst I am not condemning them, the quality of some of their remanufactured or reconditioned parts is questionable at times, and I hear far too often of problems with their reconditioned parts, which invariably leads to previous customers going elsewhere. I cannot remember the last time I bought anything from Rimmers - possibly also due to the fact that the 2000 range appears now to be low on their list of prioritised vehicles.

Re: Terrible rattle on start up.
Is it a rattle, or a 'low down' rumble until the oil light goes out?
