Bottom radiator hose - PAS cars

#1 Post by Llessur » Wed Jan 30, 2019 1:36 am

The 2500s with power steering (like mine) use a different bottom radiator hose arrangement than the cars with manual steering – instead of a single hose there are two shorter hoses which are connected by a metal pipe. This arrangement prevents the hose from chafing on the water pump pulley.

Does anyone know if there is anything special about the two short hose lengths for the PAS cars (GRH554 and GRH555) or can I cut down the new non-PAS bottom hose I already have?

I can’t see why this wouldn’t work and I’ll give it a go anyway but thought I worth checking here to stop me ruining a perfectly good hose if it won’t work.

Well it certainly looks feasible from the diagrams in the parts list although I have to say that I have never tried it myself, my car is power steering anyway and I always had the proper hose to hand, get the knife/saw out and give it a go if the non pas hose is of no use to you.

Yes cut the non-PAS hose to suit and, if it was me, I would fit a stainless steel pipe

The top PAS hose is the 45 degree (approx) angle, and the bottom PAS hose is a 90 degree angle but one side of the 90 angle is longer than the other. The longer side goes to the radiator. As Tony says, they can be cut from a non PAS hose.
The old hoses should be sufficient for templates when making the cuts.
Preferably, the 'new' hoses should be the reinforced type which helps prevents any swelling when hot and under pressure.

Cheers all - the hose has been sliced and spliced and fits a treat.

A little bit fiddly to fit but I got there in the end. Sadly I'll have to do this all over again when my stainless pipe is delivered from the UK...

If you position the hose on a certain angle and trim a slight piece to shorten it like I have done you can get away with using a standard non power steering bottom hose. Mines been on for 7 years and over 25,000 miles without issues 8)
