A trap for unwary travellers.

#1 Post by trolleybus » Tue Jan 01, 2019 5:57 am

I am replacing my 2500TC auto with a manual. Along with all the bits I needed, I got hold of two fly wheels. One the chamfered teeth of the ring gear facing to the front and one had the teeth facing back, with bad wear on the front. So I just thought some dope had put the ring gear on back the front. Then I was offered another fly wheel and this one had the teeth facing backwards. So! After some investigation I find that there were two styles of starter one inertia style (early) and one pre engaged style (later). My Haynes manual although describing both, doesn’t appear to mention the teeth orientation that suites either style. It would appear the early engages from the back of the fly wheel and the later engages from the front. Luckily I had fitted the new ring gear facing to the front.

Thats a coincidence! I have just had this conversation with an owner of a 72 2000 who has just fitted a replacement used flywheel that I supplied and he commented on the fact that the ring gear was fitted the opposite way on the replacement. He stated that it appeared to be relevant to the direction of engagement depending on whether an inertia or pre engaged starter (Mk1 or Mk2 flywheel?)

As far as I know, Mk1 engines use an inertia type and Mk2 a pre-engaged type.

When I fitted an ex-TR6 engine in my Mk1 saloon (all those years ago!), I came across this problem and had to buy a pre-engaged starter to get it all going.

Mind you, it did go like stink as it was geared as a 2000 and the engine was a CP type!

Cheers,
Mike.
