Quickest way to get engine out

#1 Post by Llessur » Thu Nov 01, 2018 10:33 pm

I need to get rid of my parts car fairly quickly as I need the driveway space for another project that I've "accidentally" acquired. It'll get advertised on Gumtree as a bare shell for a few days but it might be off to the knackers yard for this one :(

I plan to spend some time at the weekend stripping as much off as I can - I'm fine with most of it but need to know what the quickest way to get the engine out is.

The gearbox is already out so can it easily come out from above, or do I need to spend time fiddling around underneath to remove the suspension crossmember? I don't want to spend any more time than is necessary doing this, but I do want to hang on to the engine as the one in my other 2500 is something of an unknown quantity and currently not running.

Cheers all!

The engine will come out easily from above if the gearbox is off. Just take care negotiating the sump past the steering rack, it is easy to damage the hydraulic pipes on top of the rack (assuming you have power steering).

Lovely stuff, that's what I presumed/was hoping. No power steering on this car so one less thing to worry about...

If it's a parts car I presume you will be scrapping the shell once stripped?

When I did this once I just cut the front metal work out of the way with an angle grinder, lowered the complete engine and gearbox onto a plank of wood, and dragged it out from the front along the ground.
Or you leave the engine and drag the car off backwards.

The best way to change a radiator when the cage nuts decide to shear on you. You can always weld it back together! No one would ever know.

Right - I might have a go at getting the engine out this weekend. I'll take it out from above as that seems easiest considering the gearbox is already off.

Where is best to lift it from given there are no lifting eyes?

I presume it might be easiest to remove the bonnet yes?
