Hi,

Length of dipstick tube from the boss on the block to the tube open end - 104mm

Distance between the cup on the dipstick (where the felt washer is) to the HIGH mark - 267mm

And to the LOW mark from the cup - 291mm

Does this help?

Cheers,
Mike.

Yes, these will help if they were measured on original Triumph 2.5Pi mk1 engine. (I'm not sure which changes were brought in through evolment of mk2.)

Measured values sound logical except - possibly - the height of dipstick tube that differs from earlier measured values in this thread.

Thanks,
J

A back-to-basics method often advocated on the SeriesII LandRover forum for cutting through all the uncertainties of dipstick length and H/L markings is simply to pour in precisely the quantity of oil specified in the handbook and then make that the High mark.
Obviously allow for the filter volume if not fitting a new one.

The function of the dipstick is as a tell-tale for getting the correct volume, which is what really matters. It should be between parameters partly because the volume will determine the degree of cooling, and also it is important that the big ends don't touch the oil surface. The degree of tilt doesn't affect either of those within sensible limits - obviously you can't tilt the engine by 45% - but a small wedge under the mounting will make more difference to the dipstick reading than to the clearance under the crankshaft.

These measurements came from a TR6 'CP' engine I have here. I think that all 2.5 blocks were the same. However, I stand to be corrected!

I should have written, engine for comparison must be from 2.5Pi mk1 saloon or estate. That's because saloons/estates have canted installation of engine.

Thanks,
J

I think Clifford has the best solution.

Hopefully not needing too many bits.

Returning to the question after visiting the project car 2.5Pi saloon (Mk1), with original 2500cc engine that carries CR prefix engine number....

Measured distances
From the boss on the block to the dipstick tube open end - 116 mm
From cup on the dipstick to LOW mark - 283mm

These don't seem to match exactly with the measurements given for comparison.
I didn't notice any stepped diameter or flange on the dipstick tube. Oil dipstick itself is original and intact.

This leaves installation of dipstick tube under suspect, but I need to recheck, and possibly "fine tune" after next oil change.

Thanks,
J
