My MK1 has an engine number starting MC instead of MB.
from a bit of surfing it could be that this is the correct engine for a mk1. But probably not my mk1 so it is a replacement engine. All the same though, apparently they were put in the later mk1's.
Does anyone know anything about these engines. for example, is the timing the same? is there anything different I ought to know about?

Just had a look on my database and it shows MC as being very late (1969) Mk1 2000. These particular ones seem to have been export engines - New Zealand and South Africa.
These would I suspect be the same spec as the first Mk2 2000 engines but stand to be corrected on that.

Basically MC engines were fitted as Ted says to the very last of the MK1's - generally 'G' reg models, with the modified PI body shell with the spare wheel well in the boot floor instead vertically mounted.
I would question the above 'export' information - all the ones I have had have been UK vehicles registered here since new. I have had three. My current 1969 Royal Blue Mk1 2000 is one example.
I have also examined quite a few whilst doing 'Concours' judging at our Nationals, and all the Mk1's with the modified PI shell seem to have MC engines.
There is very little published about the actual differences from MB engines, but the Mk1's I have owned over the years and others I have driven with these engines fitted, compared to MB engines, seem to 'breath' a lot better, and have much more 'go' especially in the acceleration department, are smoother and they seem to want to 'rev' more. All in all, in my opinion, they are a lot better than the MB engine!
Cosmetically, I am not aware of visual differences apart from the engine number.
All the settings on mine such as timing, points /dwell, carburettor needles, plug gap etc etc are exactly the same as Triumph intended as in the original workshop manual, and it runs well!
Unless you have any serious issues with the MC engine, I personally would be rather pleased that someone has changed your original engine for the better!!!
