2000 mk 1 camshaft upgrade

#1 Post by Backski » Wed Apr 15, 2015 5:26 pm

Hello,

I have an early 2000mk 1 engine and am about to rebuild it again having discovered a great water leak out of the font of the block ( core plug behind the front cover plate aaaarghhh.

As I am about to get back into it, I understand a good upgrade for the engine to boost power would be to change the cam shaft to a gt6 or Vitesse mark 2 cam ( and followers of course).

Can anyone advise if this is of benefit, and should the dizzy be changed too or stick to the original one. I have run this mark 1 engine with big SU's for a whirl and she runs well, but feel a better head and cam would help even more.

any advice please ?

Also, would the triple webers work better along with a 6-3-1 Phoenix manifold ?

I know of the whereabouts of an SAH mark 1 engine, not sure if it is worth saving ( seized I think ?)

Thanks Alex

Hello Alex,

I don't know enough about suitable camshafts but would suggest if you do go for a different cam that you change the distributor to the one that matches the engine that the cam came from.

A 6-3-1 is a good boost but unless you are going racing, S.U.s will be a better choice as Webers only really gain at the higher end of the rev range and probably will be less flexible and more thirsty, they certainly look good though.

You should have a 306632 cam which is the GT6 Mk1/Vitesse Mk1 one as standard. The recommended upgrade I believe is the Early PI/GT6 Mk2/Vitesse Mk2 308778 cam. Depends what state of tune you're aiming for and what you budget is.
Chris Witor has a lot of technical information on his site. http://www.chriswitor.com/technical.php Worth giving Chris a call as he has a lot of experience tuning early Mk1 engines. There's also plenty of others in the Register who appear on the forum from time to time who I'm sure will also give you their two pennies worth too.

You want the early PI cam in.
As Alec states use the SU carbs.

My 65 MK1 , as the above plus 6-3-1 manifold.

Only other option is inject it BUT, an early "breather snout" MK1 engine can be made to be as fast as a PI engine

Very early Mk1 engines used smaller cam followers so that might also be something to think about when using an uprated CAM. I guess it depends on what we all mean by 'early'!

I agree with the others, the 308778 cam (GT6/Vitesse/early PI) is a nice CAM with good power but still keeping some flexibilty at lower revs.

Definately talk to Chris.

Cheers,
Mike.

Dear all,

Many thanks for your advice, have spoken to Chris as suggested and indeed the 308778 is his favoured one plus modified head studs. The Sah head I have has very large inlet valves but should work with SU's but finding a decent exhaust with " the same primary lengths" even as a 6-3-1 May be a challenge.

Thanks again I'll post how I get on before I go rallying again.......
