Strombergs / SUs

#1 Post by yandy » Thu Oct 10, 2013 10:12 am

Hello,

I'm having eternal problems getting the existing Strombergs on my 1973 Mk2 2000 to run well. I've done all within my capacity and that of my neighbourhood TR6 driving mechanic.

I've been offered a set of SUs, although would still need a manifold.

What are the relative merits of each - Strombergs and SUs? Is this a sensible way to go?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy,

The strombergs do work OK but I have to admit to preferring SUs myself. I fitted a pair of HS6s to my 1971 2000 and after some messing with needle choice, I did get it running well.

What's the basic problem you're having? You say not running well, but what particularly? One of the most important things is to make sure the diaphragms are not split and are fitted correctly. But I guess you've checked all that several times!

Cheers,
Mike.

Thanks Mike,

I think I'll keep the SUs as an option for later, but useful to here some support for them. I've been reading up and I'm ready to go another round with the Strombergs - they ought to be good.

It was all in the needle adjuster o-rings. As a relative newby, it took me some nerve to go in there and work that out. Both were solid and stuck to the valve (the car had been stationary for a long time. One of the brass grub screws locating the needle had been screwed up tight to the needle so it couldn't move anyway, and then had half its head broken off too so needed to have a hole drilled which allowed an equally and opposite broken screwdriver to shift it.

All that's much further than I've ever gone into a carb in my life so I'm feeling pleased with myself. In the process I've learned to marvel at the ingeniousness of them. The best help I found was here: http://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technica ... CarbsI.htm - gave me the confidence to go in there and recommended to anyone needing encouragement.

What needles did you use? Trying the same set up on another 1971 2000. BCY perhaps?
Thanks

Sorry for the delay Charles!

I'll have to go and look up what I ended up with. I know they came from Burlen. I can't check on the car as it's now with a new owner!

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Charles,

I went through the old 2000 file but can't find which needles I used. I found all the original calculations I did when I had the 2.5 head skimmed down and some graphs I plotted of the various different needles I tried, but no info on what I eventually used.

Sorry!

Cheers,
Mike.
