2500S is definitely a bit asthmatic over 4000 but should still rev freely to +5000

As already mentioned check it is not starving of fuel - could be a blocked filter or substandard pump or crap in the tank.

What do the plugs look like? Even coloured? Black, biscuit or white?

Compressions OK? Should be about 150psi across the board

Most 2500S's are set pretty lean - especially for emissions testing but really prefer to run a bit richer. Assume airfilter is clean - the airbox is restrictive enough as standard but must be correctly fitted to run properly.

I assume it has the correct airbox not something aftermarket that WON'T work without different needles

Ok lads, thanks for all your helpful advises, I´ll try and sort out the ignition first and then move on to the carb side of things.
I do run K&N atm but just changed them a couple of mls ago, before that I was running the original setup and didn´t feel any difference.

And Owen´s hint was spot on, the grinding noise was caused by the fan. As I couldn´t find my Kenlowe one I altered the viscous one to be fixed and it is gone!

my 2000 always felt like it should have been a bit more lively. i hadnt driven one before i bought mine in april. i had the diff rebuilt last week and while it was there the chap checked and ajusted the timing, tweeked the carbs and fitted a lucas sport coil. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! much more lively and "crisp" it feels. A really good job especially now the diff is silent!

hi kev. basically the diff "gears" were ok having only done 40k miles but it had all new bearings, seals, ujs and 1 half shaft as it was damaged trying to get the bearing off past a lip on the shaft end (not by me  )
inc the tune up and parts it was £500. westside motors in Bridgwater did the work as ive seen lots of classics in there and the rate is £40 an hr. :)

OK, finally I found some time yesterday to do a little work on the car.
The ignition seemed to be ok but as there was a pinking noise when accelerating, I just set it it a bit earlier and the noise seems to be gone. It also seems to rev a bit better (and higher that is) but still feels quite sluggish. It is nearly impossible to keep up with a Smart and the likes, above 60, they very easily see me off probably without even trying.

The ignition seemed to be ok as there is only a grove and a hand painted white line on the pulley. The grove should be TDC and the white line probs is the timing it is supposed to be set at.
Otherwise it drives very nice, except that it does miss a beat here and there occasionally which is not very easy to notice when in the car. You can hear it very clearly when standing behind the car, coming from the exhaust. Dunno what that is though.

(I did drive the car ca. 700mls in the past 2 weeks and in that time nothing has changed, started first time even when below zero, but no power whatsoever)
