E-bay P.I

#1 Post by sahtuning2000 » Sat Jul 04, 2015 9:03 pm

First P.I i have seen for sale for a while(since the Manvers estate)
How much do we think this will go for??
Am i right in saying this is a later twin balance tube engine(125BHP)but in a pre facelift car,i thought they were facelift only?/
Anyway my guess is £1500 as it is,no MOT etc.

Personally, I would be more concerned about the corrosion around the windscreen than the rot in the sills, even the demister vent inside the car looks to be rusted through! I think it will more than likely reach what you suggest Dave, because its a tax exempt PI, and also the bits it has with it. Someone's going to have some serious sorting out to do though.
Its only 18 miles away from me, must resist, must resist

But it's very close to me!
I agree with Dave B - a hefty bill for welding could be soon on the cards if bought....
I can see you are a little bit interested Dave (sahtuning2000)! - asking if he could arrange delivery?!!!?

I'm with Dave on that windscreen problem - seen it all before.

Screen must come out and looking at the extent of that rust damage I would suspect it will be necessary to repair much of the lower part of windscreen aperture, probably with a replacement cut from another car. Serious work required to sort it.

Also check for any evidence of water ingress into the front of the cabin area. It could be coming through this rust at the bottom of the windscreen or it may be a problem from the wing, but with the extent of rust as Dave has identified there could be a heater plenum problem.

All this means a load of potentially difficult repairs so anyone thinking of buying be VERY careful. Buy if the price is right and you are ready for the repair work.

£2500 and its not roadworthy?
But as you say Charles try finding another P.I for sale at the moment,i don,t think manual/auto makes much difference to be honest.
Its a P.I and still on the injection, may it go higher and higher!

Well, there is this one, looks ok from five yards away, went to see it a few weeks back with a mate who was looking for a mk2, has more replacement metal than original, runs & sounds like a bag of spanners, needs a lot more work. Unsurprisingly, its still for sale! Some people have very inflated ideas of their cars value, or perhaps they are under estimating the cost to bring them up to scratch.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to say this car is only worth a pittance because of this problem - after all it has many upgrades and other things which increase its value. AND it is a PI :D

What I am saying is that this is a difficult repair (have experience of it on both a Mk1 and a Mk2) and with the evidence of the rusty demister vent covers there could be a deeper issue here which must be addressed and should be costed into the equation of any repair work. The screen must come out and replacement metal welded in which because if its shape and the sealing of the rubber screen surround against it needs to be an exact shape - ideally a section from a donor car.
