Indicator Repeaters.

#1 Post by johnconradlee » Tue Apr 02, 2013 12:27 pm

Indicator repeaters seem to be a finite resource and becoming relatively scarce. Is this lens used on anything else or is it unique to our cars?
I went to change the bulb on LuLU and the lens disintegrated in my hands, luckily it was the left one and Earl Parts have NOS left ones at £13.04 each (so I bought 2).
Chris Witor has a couple of slightly manky S/H ones (for £9.75 each ex VAT), I and I would assume Mick Dolphin might have a some too (although I haven't checked).
Can I suggest we add these to the list of things for the spares group to investigate in a non-urgent manner (as they don't break often and there are still a few spares knocking around)?

As you rightly say Earlpart as the n/s ones NOS but it is the o/s that are hard to find.
There are also 3 types I believe 9could be wrong) PFL mk1 (flat), FL MK1 curved and then there the MK2.

Mick Dolphin as not got any NOS o/s ones..................the only ones he had were mainly n/s and slightly shop soiled.

I also believe that they are unique to "our" cars.

Dave would be the best person to ask on that but certainly the pi ones (early mk2) are flatish compared to the domed ones on the estate.

My understanding is that Mk1's and some very early Mk2s ( as you know some of the parts from Mk1s were carried over to the early Mk2) had the same repeater - flat faced, but then on Mk2 there was the deeper flat faced and the deeper rounded repeaters. I have quite a few spares of all these three types; if there were four types, I'll stand corrected!

Yes I understand (from looking at my cars) three basic types and left and right. This means six lots of tooling.

According to my various copies of the parts book, there are at least four separate part number references:
  • 615012/615013 (LH/RH) for Mk1s to MB40699
  • 710581/710582 for Mk1s from MB40700 (and, I believe, early Mk2s)
  • 216270/216271 for later pre-facelift Mk2s
  • TKC0382/TKC0381 for facelift Mk2s (NKC0007/NKC0008 as lenses only)
Other than the variations already indicated ( - sorry!), I don't know the precise characteristics of each, but reasonably sure that there was a pretty comprehensive CW article on the subject in Six Appeal some years back...

I wonder how many of these are compatible?
The late rounded type can be made to fit a Mk1 (did this a few months ago). Requires a small amount of filing to the lip that holds the top of the lens in. Also the light fitting (if you change that too) requires the metal bit that earths the bottom part of the bulb holder removing and an extra wire soldering on.
Maybe if we measured all three/four.....+ varieties we could rationalise the Leyland parts mess and come up with one that fits all our cars? This might be something we could do at the National as there is likely to be most if not all of the varieties of indicator repeater lens there.
