diff seal

I have a leak where the nose joins onto the diff. Its a fair drip now, and my mum is complaining of it on the garage floor. She has a point. I can't keep relying on pieces of cardboard on the floor.
Does anyone know how to replace this seal. Jonny Dog said get some advice as he has never had to do one, but he has heard that this could be repaired by taking the prop shaft off. If this is so, it would cheer me up and a sweet old lady.

Sorry, but looks like the pinion seal needs replacing. The oil will also have washed the grease from the quill shaft bearing which is a sealed grease filled one. this will also need replacing.
Not the simplest of jobs. The nose piece will need to come off. I've always dropped the diff to do this but better brains than mine will tell you it can come off with the diff in place.

It does require the diff to be removed to replace the seal. Secure the car with the rear supported on good stout wood spreaders under the sills. Undo the four bolts at the front where it meets the quill shaft/subframe and two at the rear. Seal is an easy replacement with the diff off. You will need to remove the exhaust rear section to allow the subframe to pitch downwards.
The quill shaft bearing can be replaced with the propshaft unbolted from under the car. Use a quality bearing from reputable suppliers like Chris Witor, or you will be doing the job again pretty soon! Guess how I know!

In addition to Charles' post, don't forget to undo the handbrake cable at one brake back plate. If you don't, the whole subframe assembly will hang on the handbrake cable!

The seal runs on the quill shaft that is part of the nose piece assembly. You ought to check the outside of the quill shaft where the seal runs as that can also get marked.
The front bearing is just behind where the prop bolts and is easy to replace when the nose piece is removed from the diff. Remove the front (big) circlip and the whole assembly can be driven out forward. Then change the bearing - with a 'good' one as already suggested. Also for the seal! As the books say, replacement is the reversal of removal!

Hi All
OK it is starting to make sense.
Why am I standing the car on the cills. when you say a wood spreader how long how wide etc.
I know I will be able to manage getting diff off, I just need to know how to stand the car for this one. Thanks everyone, this is very helpful advice.

You cannot support the rear of the car on the subframe, because you need it to droop to get the diff off the back of it. The car weight at the rear must be supported on the sills. A piece of 2" x 4" would be about right, probably 3ft long ish plus!

I am wondering about whether when I separate the nose, what to expect. I am assuming the the seal is just in the lip inside. Nothin else is going to drop out. Also when I reattach the nose, is there a gasket I ought to have handy or is the seal all that is required.

No, no gasket or anything else to fall out. You will have some oil come out though once the diff moves back.
