Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Are they valve spring collets, or part of the Oil pump?

You'd be surprised what you find in the sump. When I put a magnetic drain plug in the sump of my S, at the next oil change, attached to the drain plug was a tapered cross head machine screw like the one located in the pedestal of the rocker shaft. Fortunately, when I removed the rocker cover, there was still one there. I can only assume that the one in the sump had been there since manufacture. Can't think of any other way it got there!

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Well looking at the offending item it appears to be made of alloy where it came from don't know. The oil pump is intact if a little worn, the rotors being out of tolerance. I expected this the oil pressure was low when hot.
The Pistons and rods are now out at some point a little dirt got to the bearings and all of the crank journals for the rods are slightly scored so a regrind looks like its on the cards. The mains look ok so far I sill have three to uncover.
Also removed is the front sealing block. I have a stainless replacement to go in from Jigsaw racing. The front engine plate removes as well. Crank end float was checked and just over tolerance so new thrusts should suffice. The piston rings are very worn no wonder oil consumption was on the high side, the oil control rings being particularly bad. So the shopping list has grown and the predicted machining costs have gone up. Back to work tomorrow so progress will come to a halt for a while.

Well its been a while since the last posting. Since then the crankshaft has been reground 10 thou under size and balanced. The mains where oval and the big ends under size on of which was 2.5 thou too small. The flywheel has been re faced and balanced together with the clutch cover. I also had the sump and rocker cover cleaned up. Under all that muck and grease corrosion typical Triumph.

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
After these parts where returned the block and head have gone in for machining. The bores where tapered too much 2-3 thou difference top to bottom. The honing tool did not touch the top inch and a half of the bores. Also being done is chemical cleaning which the machine shop has had to send the block and head away for. I am hoping they are back soon or the engine will not be ready till later this year.
Anyway here is some other parts cleaned and painting started.

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Are you getting them powder coated Chris?
I have just had a rocker cover bead blasted due to minor surface corrosion and powder coated in silver - £20 all in. Not worth attempting myself and it looks like new!

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
I am aiming to spray it myself John. The sump and timing cover have come up ok considering they are now 50.
The timing cover is now assembled with a new tensioner and oil seal.

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Been busying myself in the garage for a few days painting the block and head. Checking the oilways are clear of debris in the block.
The head has been assembled with new valves/springs etc. I did find the oilway at the back of the head although thoroughly washed and acid dipped it was still gummed up. This has now been rectified. one piston has been trial fitted in a bore to check clearance. All looks good. A few of the rings have been checked for gaps. These are new Hastings rings, I have found that the spacer for the oil control rings does not butt other than this the first two sets I tried were nearly right. The gap has a slight taper.I don't know if this is correctable as yet the taper is about 1 to 1.5 thou.
Anyway here is a picture of the head.

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Have you resorted to cycling whilst the PI is in the garage Chris??
What colour did you decide for the block?
