Starting with a recent incident and tell tail sounds of immanent disaster, that horrid, loud, embarrassing knocking sound that comes from your car when mostly at low engine revs, but only ever noticed on an automatic version. I felt it was time to spend a little of my very little spare time and get my Triumph a little more cared for before things fall apart.
First job was to remove the transmission and old broken drive plate. Can't believe this was still driving up until I decided enough was enough
However as one knows old car and there regular attention requirements it doesn't end there!
I will keep my finding and up keep posts going...............Till later
Opps a bit of a cock up to start with I'll get it sorted with a little more practice
Project Or Just Regular Up Keep??
Re: Project Or Just Regular Up Keep??
Looks like you were lucky there, and caught it just in time before it let go completely! At least it is a relatively easy fix (assuming you have a replacement flywheel of course!).
So what else are you expecting to, or intending to repair?

Re: Project Or Just Regular Up Keep??
I sure was, had other plates crack but nothing as thorougher as this one
Have a replacement ready to go in
I was just expecting the flex-plate change, while under the car removing the transmission I noticed.........To be continued
Re: Project Or Just Regular Up Keep??
What I happened to notice was an oil leak!!
Coming from the top part of the power steering rack
It didn't end there either as I carried on removing the rest of the broken drive plate, I found another oil leak
What's with these British cars and oil leaks
I was unsuccessful in separating the sump pan gasket from the rear crank shaft housing and therefore ended up with having the remove the front suspension cross member and steering rack (which needed to come off anyway) and sump pan to remove the housing to replace the worn and leaking rear seal. New second hand drive plate and new rear seal fitted into the housing and ready to refit
Then after a discussion on the reason these drive plates crack in the first place it was brought to my attention that worn thrust washers can be a contributing factor. The next day this procedure took place.
Followed by these little half round bits very easily siding out onto the palm of my hand
Guess what I will be doing very soon

Re: Project Or Just Regular Up Keep??
A very unusual event happened last week! i had some spare time so got to work sorting out the new thrust washers and refitted the sump and drive plate along with the new sump gasket and rear crank seal
Next stage will be the cleaning up of the transmission. I am going to cut a 60 litre drum in half so the gearbox can be sat in it while it is cleaned, don't want a big oily mess on the drive!
Need to find a drum that hasn't had flammables inside first.
