Work before the National trip

#1 Post by M5driver » Wed Jun 01, 2016 12:48 pm

Hi Folks, how many of you are beavering away under the bonnet or the car. Getting ready for the National this year.

I've been busy Diff out to fix a leak and replace the Quill shaft bearing and diff oil seal. I fitted new stainless washers in the process.

Fit a new prop shaft from Chris Witor. With new bolts and nylocks.

Hopefully I want to fit new cv drive shafts from Classic Driving Development. Check them out on the web.

To do is re fit the exhaust it was blowing at the gearbox joint slightly and at the pigs nose on the subframe quite badly. Still passed the MOT like this.

Also done valve clearances check and adjust. Some were a bit loose.

Checked injectors for leaks. The nylon insulators require replacing. Also check the metering unit out and fuel pressure.

Final top up of diff to do and check the gearbox level.

To do change the engine oil and filter and associated seals with the spin on conversion.

Then the rear brakes check and adjust and refit the handbrake cable.

So not too much to do its just fitting it in around work.

Nice work Chris, the new propshaft will no doubt be a good investment, I had one from CW for the estate a few years ago and it was brilliant.
Will be interested to hear your thoughts on the CV shafts when you have them fitted too.

We will be without a big saloon this National ( I hope I can stand the shame of it all) but life has got in the way of work on either car so they are both without MOT and I am without the time to sort them in the next couple of weeks.

Chris , I fitted the CV shafts and hubs about a year ago - very happy with them - be careful not to overextend them when fitting - I had one side pop out of its CV on the inner which locked the suspension at full droop - safer to jack the trailing arm to close to normal running height when fitting the hubs ( you fit the hubs last and slide them over the driveshaft spline)

Made a big difference to refinement - my Triumph hubs were noisy but I didn't realise until I fitted the CDD shafts

Cheers

Know where you're coming from, my red 2500 didn't get taken for an MOT last year, but its in for one later today, so hopefully I'll be coming in that! If not, its another sloooow ride up to Scotland in the 2000 auto. At least that only needs a wash for its test
Edit: Passed MOT ok, came home,, jumped on the computer, did the free tax.
Scotland here we come :D :D

Well folks thanks for the comments. Colin what are you going to turn up to the national in I wonder?

The drive shafts are on now pics to follow.

I found quite a few things had worked loose!

The gearbox mount nuts and brake pipe fixing on one of the trailing arms. Sorted now.

Still have quite a bit to do and working this evening in this heat 25 degrees is no fun. I know its hotter in Oz Andy. I can't wait to try the car. Must try and do a bit more tomorrow. Under two weeks to go now.

Happy Triumphing

Well more pictures for you. The drive shafts are on and so is the exhaust.

During a compression test this evening I found the battery has seen better days and does not hold charge. I found the plugs were very coked up but this may be from starting and idling and not driving much.

Diff oil nearly topped up. You can never get the last bit out of the bottle. Any tips o this.

Gearbox still to check, rocker cover to put back on and all the injectors to fit. PAS topped up. Engine oil still to do.

Nothing was done yesterday due to a huge thunder storm and heavy rain.

Hopefully more done tomorrow.

Stand the bottle in a bucket/pan of boiling water for 15 mins or so to improve the viscosity of the oil  .

For Mk1 - No idea but seeing as they are effectively bespoke , ring him and ask

Hi Bill,

He does shafts for the TR range 5/6. If they are nearer the length of a MK1 shaft the you are quids in. Start saving they cost lots but cheaper than scparts. I recon its possible say tr shaft with 2000/stag hub. As Andy states worth a phonecall and it in a nice part of the UK.
