If my memory serves me correctly from when I used to deafen myself with these contraptions, the 8 track refers to the recording technique.E.G.8track,16 track etc.
I used to have a D J friend who had an 8 track recorder, and he used to do me 90 minute tapes of whatever I wanted, usually two albums and some fillers! Benefit being, solid music with no awkward silences!!
The player had 4 channels, like 4 album sides. The best thing was that you could put in a tape and it would keep playing as long as the car battery would last!Nothing worse than getting a bit romantic and having to stop and change over a cassette!  Happy Days-----------------------------

P.o. gave me a 'sack' full of cassettes to go with mine,'to assist me on my long journey home, and to give me enjoyment thereafter' . They stayed in the rear compartment all the way home, and after a few days of getting her down here curiosity made me check out 'whats in the bag' - been in the loft ever since  . I prefer the period look of the unit though ,as oppose a modern. But it's unlikely ever to fire up again

Edit - and no wise cracks - 'is he talking the 8 track,or the car itself'

I had an 8-track player in the Mk1 all those years ago. I also had an Akai 8-track recorder! As Bill says, the 8-track refers to the method of recording on the 1/4" tape. There are 8 tracks along it's length, 2 used for the stereo, so 4 tracks of stereo music. The tape is a loop inside and the joint that makes the loop has a piece of metal over it which is used to drive a solenoid which make the head jump up (or down) to the next pair of tracks.

I must have a load of recorded tapes around but at that age, I suspect the glue on the joint will be poor and I don't want to consider the mess inside the cartridge when that lets go!

Cheers,
Mike.

The wheels came with Yokohama 185/70 R14 already fitted (they were bought off eBay)
time will tell whether I keep them or not

Still plenty to do, replace the steering rack is next task then we think a clutch will soon be needed. while traversing two huge puddles each at least 20yds long and nearly a foot deep we lost drive with crashes and bangs from the gearbox. Luckily we were near the end of the flood and managed to get out, and as the water drained it all went back to normal. So ok for now but I'm told the previous owner was known to rest his foot on the clutch while driving.

Hi All

Sorry not been on here much recently.

Steering Rack fitted, that prompted the clutch to fail (tapered pin broke) fit new clutch, slave cylinder, get tracking done then sealed beam headlight failed, head light switch mucking about again. so much for despite standing for so long but everything worked when we collected it. It keeps making me spend money of bits i didn't expect to. They're all making it better and it runs better every time i use it but its still frustrating that I have no control. It would be nice to not bail it out every time it rains.

It is Tax exempt now though

I've not been on here much recently either but stick with it  Had my estate coming up for 10 years, been off the road for the last 8  but much work done. I just keep thinking to myself 'the Jones' have no chance of keeping up with me - I could buy what they own,but they have almost NO chance of buying what I own :D . Super rare car now. And still easier and cheaper to repair than the Jones's
