I guess you've gas plug-welded the outer sill bottom to the middle sill? That's how I've done it in the past, albeit with MIG!

Hello Mike, overall I prefer gas to Mig welding every time if I have access to both sides of the panel to planish the weld. The sill section was joined using the Mig for plugs on this occasion because of the location to grind them afterwards. Grinding Mig welds is not one of my favourite tasks. Mig welding is a chaotic affair, flash splatter wallop, then grinding off what you’ve just done with more noise and sparks, there’s something quite serene with the gas option.

Hello all just posting some more work, tackling the rear sill section now.

Carefully unpicking and cutting the sill section some tin worm.



Cutting back to sound metal.



Welded and fabricated new section.







Welded new section to the lower half of the original sill. I replaced the whole lower part in the end as it was a bit on the thin side. Quick fit temporary fit and all welded up.



Two done, two to go no wobbles yet.

I've done some gas welding in the past but I've always found the heat distortion quite bad but I guess that's more down to experience than anything else. Certainly, gas welding is much more of a skilled discipline - which I don't have! (I don't have any gas kit either so that tends to concentrate the mind!)

Grinding down the MiG puddles is a bit of a pain, but I have one of those little air 'wizzers' and that's not too bad.

However, none of my work is up to your standard.....

Thanks for all the replies to the posts. Moving along quite nicely now just finished the area around the the bottom of the rear arch and the closing sill panel.

Starting off with a bit of a gnarly mess.



Cutting back to sound metal.





Slight compound curve on the new section.



Fabricated sill cover section.





Just have to replace the rear seat belt reinforcement plate.

Very nice work there.
When I first started in the panel trade it was gas welding, spot braising and lead loading not to mention hammer and file, I used to love the finish with the gas, so much more tidier than the mig. When the newer cars of the time with different types a steel came along the gas wasn't allowed to be used with it and of course the mig with its special gas took over. All down to time and money I guess.

Hello all! The os rear inner arch was lost to rust so this is a bit of a lengthy post this one.

I've split the arch into four separate parts I have no real pattern to go by.





Bit of a trial fit.



No turning back now.









Next section fabricated



Sitting nicely.







Just finished the lower section thought, I took some pictures of this but cant seem to find them.



Zinc weld through primer, a few bumps need planishing out when fitting the outer arch but overall pleased with the progress

I,am amazed at the progress of the P.I and before i can comment you post yet more amazing photos of the car.
Great to see it coming alone nicely and the photos are fantastic and show arears of the Triumphs we rarely see.

Fantastic work, even to re-creating the strengthening swages!

I think I have a long way to go to achieve anything approaching this standard.
