'66 Mk1 saloon project

#1 Post by SeanMk12000 » Fri Feb 08, 2013 6:57 pm

Got started on my project today, stripped the back end out and the seats and carpet. Found the rear inner arches to be rotten all the way round so these will need replacing. I can't upload any pics as yet as it was dark by the time if finished but I'll get some Sunday.

Good to hear that you intend to restore this particular car ,if its the same one i'm thinking of it might have gone for spares...,a sad end for any Mk1.I am in the middle of my own renovation and look forward to seeing photos and details of yr own progress,
cheers for now,
Laurence

Thanks Laurence, I nearly had a cardiac arrest when I checked out the prices of inner rear arch repair panels!

I've got a friend who is going to do the welding for me tho and he seems to think making these panels shouldn't be too hard.

Sean,
For hidden rot check under the rear seat squab, lower front windscreen corners and carefully along the sills especially the inner edge thats not visible from roadside. Is the car still in Cornwall or you and it further up the line?,
cheers,
Laurence.
ps look forward to seeing photos

Laurence - I'm actually about a mile as the crow flies from where Mark was storing the car so staying local! I've got the rear seat out and it appears the rot is very localised around the arches which is awkward but I'd rather have two big panels need making than 20 small ones.

The cills appear ok, they've had repair or replacement at some point in the car's life.
The bottom of the windscreen has rot in it and I think this may be the biggest challenge, but I've had some advice and fingers crossed Ted may be helping out with a panel cut from his rusty rek.

I'm extremely daunted at the welding (more accurately the potential cost of the welding) but certainly not disheartened and fingers crossed the car will be present at the 50th anniversary National in Somerset

Struggling to get the pictures up I'm afraid. If a mod could delete my failed attempts I'd appreciate it

Done as requested :D

I know the feeling - took me a long time to work out how to do it and I pride myself we having a little ability with computers. I was even nearly forced to have to get Colin (CRAJ) to do it for me.

Firstly reduce the size of the images - if too large they will be rejected and you will have to reduce them further.
Then at the bottom of the 'Post a Reply' page there is 'Upload an attachment'. Click on 'Browse' and use this to go to the reduced size picture you want.
Click 'Add file' and its description will appear below alongside a new 'File name.

Repeat for the next image you want to post but be careful in case you make the total of all sizes too much. though you can delete some if this happens.

If all else fails e-mail the images you want to post to me and I'll do it for you.

Hope this makes sense - and I expect someone will say I have explained it incorrectly! However I went through the procedure to remind myself and attached are two much reduced photos (from the previous owner) of the Mk2 2500 estate I have just acquired. It looks nice but there are some scabby bits around the rear hatch and on the front wings, though a £6k engine rebuild with CW six branch and Wilwood brakes makes up for it ...... :D .
